D&D 5E Spell & Crossbones

[sblock=Quickleaf]
Ah, well we had discussed the name and 'portfolio' of Yellow Jack, not so much the exact nature of his abilities or how he'd be likely to act against interlopers aboard 'his' ship. This is all very good to know....

And now that you mention it... This may have been answered elsewhere, but is there any reason to think that Captain van Djik or the Coral Curse have been involved in the slave trade?

So would the djab be likely to attack pretty much the moment anyone stepped onto the ship? If he's more likely to hide during the day, could someone, being careful and quick, make a brief survey of the ship during daylight hours, and get out unscathed?

[SBLOCK=Unsung]The question about a connection to slavery is a good one. So far there is no indication that Captain Piet Hien van Djik was involved in slave trade, but as a ship captured by Blackbeard, The Coral Curse's origins are a bit mysterious. While it is most definitely a pirate ship now, looking for a slavery connection in its past would be a smart thing to do in play.

Anticipating an attack from Yellow Jack if you were to step foot on the ship at night would be a very reasonable concern. He is evil undoubtedly, but desperate or wicked voodounistas might call upon him as a form of biological warfare against their enemies. For example... Some voodounistas attribute the victory in the Haitian revolution against French (in the late 1700's) to a ceremony in which djab were called upon to protect the Haitians from bullets and afflict the French with yellow fever.

A brief survey of the ship during daylight hours without bothering Yellow Jack is reasonable. Many things were scavenged off the ship in broad daylight by thieves and smugglers over the last months. Of course, if one were to go below decks into the dark areas of the ship and stumble across Yellow Jack, all bets would be off.[/SBLOCK]

[sblock=Quickleaf]Excellent... Anything of interest left on the better-lit decks of the ship? Any precautions I could take while investigating? Any stories about Nassau town from the aforementioned looters who managed to steal from the beached ship...and live?[/sblock]

[SBLOCK=Unsung]Well, a lot of stuff was burned since it recently was a plague ship. The rest was stolen. About all that's left are the cannons cause they're too damn heavy. However, there are recent rumors that a Nassau-based smuggler named Komodo Roy has 4 demi-culverins for sale...which happens to be the fore/aft complement of guns on The Coral Curse...of course, he has obviously been tight-lipped about details since no one wants to advertise they've been stealing from Blackbeard!

My only word about precautions is it would be wise to either load up on lesser restoration castings/gardes (scrolls) OR find some sort of protection from disease spell. While I didn't see protection from disease in the PHB, Nia might be able to improv something using her Voodoo Rituals fortune.[/SBLOCK]

Nia looks from the ship to Katerina, and whle her face is as impassive as ever, there's a flicker of unease behind her eyes.

"No. We will not go aboard tonight." She stresses the 'not' slightly. "You need to see the ship, so you can make a good bargain, but the wickedness inside is stronger by night. The spirit within will be strong enough as it is."

She looks back at the runes and frowns a little.

"It will not be 'easy' to do, and the Blackbeard has few friends among those who could do it. He will not sail this ship again. Someone has made sure of that."

"Use that."

Kat took a moment to calculate the pros and cons of this venture. They needed a ship, the sooner the better to beat out Wallace, and had no other really good leads on that. Still, a large warning hung over them and it wasn't that the ship was cursed. It was Blackbeard. Certainly he'd put her father's training to the test.

She nods her head. "Alright, we'll give it a go. Blackbeard it is. Whatever crew we scrounge up is going to be worked hard to get the ship in order in good time. I guess that's a good thing, test their mettle before we get sailing."

"It's late and I am not certain Blackbeard would want to be disturbed over this tonight. Then again, if he's been out drinking and carousing, it could affect his mood." She pauses then laughs, "Who know if for better or worse. What say you all? Disturb him tonight or wait until morning?"

OOC: Does Katerina know where to find Blackbeard? You may have mentioned it but if you did I don't recall.

"You can decide on the way," Nia says, motioning up the beach back towards town.

"You should meet Caillou, and he should definitely meet you. He will be helping cleanse de ship after all."

Katerina agrees. "Certainly. I have important questions for him if he is going to do this thing, and join our crew. Is he available now?" She takes one more long look at the ship before turning and joining with the others walking back to town.

Steeleyes grins and turns back to face where she's going.

"I'm sure he knows we're comin' by now," she says mysteriously, and leads on towards the house on the hill.

OOC: I hope we're not moving too fast for everyone? If it ever seems like the scene is progressing, and you have a question or check you wanted to make, go ahead and post what you meant to do and we'll figure out a way to work it in.

[MENTION=8058]Queenie[/MENTION] Blackbeard lives in the old manor of Governor Trott in the walled section of Nassau. Some even consider him to be de facto governor of Nassau.

[MENTION=4936]Shayuri[/MENTION] Thanks for leading in to the meeting with the Tengu King. [MENTION=23484]Kobold Stew[/MENTION] I'll wait to hear what Barrington does before posting, but if you can justify pursuing the pirates as being within Barrington's character, we should be close to getting you back with the rest of the party.
