D&D 5E Spell & Crossbones

Barrington makes his way through the underbrush back to where the ambush had been set. He wouldn't have long here before he'd want to move (the rifleman's panic might let up and he could return with others), but he sees the rifleman's weapon still lodged in the crook of the branch, and picks it up.

The stock nestles comfortably into the crook of his shoulder, and he instantly sees that it was pointing to the cabin.

D'Avard stands in the doorway. Barrington aims and shoots, hoping to hit him in the back.

[sblock=the shot]
Assuming no range issues (rifle used to get longer range?) to hit will be 1d20+7
[roll0]

If that is a hit (damage = 1d12 for rifle (?)+5), then he spends a superiority die (+1d8 damage) for a menacing attack (surprise from the unexpected shot).

Damage [roll]1d12+5[roll] plus [roll 1d8]. And D'avard makes a Wisodm save vs. DC 13 to avoid being frightened until the end of my next turn.

OOC: I was waiting for Shayuri and Unsung to post, since you guys share the same initiative account with Kobold Stew. Grouping my response to your actions with the post of the monster actions seems to flow better. But if you prefer a more immediate "player post-DM post-player post-DM post" format I can try that.

Quickleaf said:
Barrington, Caillou, and Nia's turn is next. @Unsung you posted Caillou's turn a bit preemptively, so we can just use those results.

OOC: Sorry, I would have posted if I thought I had an action to take.

Ooc: I would prefer the group way you've been doing it, I think it will be faster? The only issue is you might be attacking someone who is already down / moved but I think we can figure that part out.

Nia draws back from the door; her heart pounding but maintaining an expression of calm.

"De door will not hold it long," she says as she prepares her staff for a fight. "When it bursts in, I will cast a spell on it. Wait for de spell before you attack."

(OOC - Sorry for the delay. Been wrestling with various computer stuff revolving around buying a new computer and getting everything set up on it. Looks like that's all done finally! Nia will move back about ten feet from the door, cast Shillelagh as a bonus action, then ready an action to cast Faerie Fire on D'avard when he gets through the door)

OOC: For your benefit (and mine!), here's a sketch of the scene with everyone's updated locations and HP totals as of the end of this post:

Another shot rings out from the small hill rising above the house. The rest of you in the house can hear the Spaniard moving outside warning the other pirates of "the Englishman."

The Spanish rifleman slides behind a short rock granting him cover from the house, but not Barrington who has height advantage, and loads his pistol as fast as he can.

Barrington's shot hits D'avard squarely in the upper back, but as the smoke from the musket clears, in the dim moonlight, Barrington can tell that the man who was once D'avard has transformed into a nightmarish hybrid of man, wolf, and eel. Though D'avard has sustained has sustained much punishment from the spellfire coming from the house on the hill, the shot doesn't seem to drop him like Barrington expected it would. Blood frenzy glints in the wolf-eel D'avard's eyes as he slams into the door repeatedly, his fingers now long talons raking against it, causing the old hinges to rattle on the frame.

The arm-in-a-sling pirate who Barrington recognizes from his little altercation in Nassau yells out, "On the hill, it's him, the one I warned you about!" He moves behind the Spanish rifleman, firing up at Barrington and missing wildly, the shot richoting off a tree stump. He appears to be running for a clump of trees to the east of the clearing which would offer good cover from Barrington's sniper perch.

The one-eyed pirate and gangly pirate pirate advance on the window that Old Zef and Teague stand behind, drawing backup pistols and releasing another barrage of pistol fire once they're in proper pistol range. One bullet hits Old Zef in the shoulder (8 damage) in a shower wood splinters and glass. Whatever boarding once protected that window has been blown to smithereens.

The ugly pirate and red-bearded pirate complete their charge, yelling in a frenzy as they attack the damaged boarded window Caillou and Nia are behind. They manage to chop thru the boards with their axes. The ugly pirate, the one Katerina shot, sticks his head thru the shattered window frame and looks about wildly with bloodshot eyes, "Yarrr! Where's the one who shot me?"

The bandana pirate drops back down into the tall grass to reload his musket.

OOC: D'Avard takes only 9 damage from Barrington's shot, thanks to his resistance.
D'Avard DC 13 Wisdom save 1d20=16 succeeds.

Caillou's second chill touch attack (which hit AC 12 and did 11 damage)... I'm going to say does half damage, because D'avard was in process of transforming (yes, I am deviating from Monster Manual requiring lycanthropes to spend an action to change form), so "midway" between AC 12 and AC 13. Half of 11 (rounded down) is 5.

Arm-in-a-Sling Pirate fires pistol at Barrington (disadvantage from range, cover +2 AC from tree stump) 1d20+4=10, 1d20+4=8 and misses.

One-Eyed Pirate fires at Old Zef (cover +2 AC from boarded window) 1d20+4=13 and hits for 1d10+2=8 damage.

Gangly Pirate fires at Old Zef (cover +2 AC from boarded window) 1d20+4=10 and misses.

Ugly Pirate and Red-Bearded Pirate attack boarded window (AC 14, HP 5) 1d20+4=8 missing, and 1d20+4=20 hitting for 5 damage (1d6+1 average).

OOC: Fenris it's your turn, and then after you Queenie. Welcome back! Hope you had a good vacation!

Also, in case Katerina readies an action to attack D'avard when he enters the house (and in light of Nia's readied faerie fire), on his next turn (assuming nothing intervenes) D'avard will be breaking down the door and entering the house...encountering the ball bearings in the process.

Old Zef growls as the ball buries itself into his shoulder. Time to prioritize he thinks. Zef steps back from the window, his back to the south wall, out of sight from the two pirates and the door. He quickly chants a spell "fortitudine magia armis"* as he prepares for D'avard's arrival.

*OOC: casting mage armor. AC now 14.
