D&D 5E Spell & Crossbones

Barrington's shot hits the Spanish rifleman squarely in the shoulder. Grunting in pain, the Spaniard takes a look around, realizing the course of battle has turned against the attacking pirates. Abandoning the musket, he dashes into the jungle at a diagonal from Barrington and the house on the hill, vanishing in the dark tangle of pines, palms, and vines.

Ducking and weaving under the seawolf's flurry of claws, Nia catches his jaw with the butt of her whirling staff, knocking one of his fangs loose and dropping D'avard to the floor. He collapses against the broken down door with a loud THUD.

The one-eyed pirate, sidestepping Caillou's bone needle, shoves his hand in the keeteel's face before tossing the bomb into the center of the cabin. "D'avard is down! Gather yourselves, you yellow-bellied boot-lickers!" His attempt to rally the pirates seems to have the opposite effect, as their morale seems to have broken. The bomb rolls about on the floor, hissing as a stream of smoke pours from its sparking wick.

Fleeing the cabin, the redbearded pirate dives thru the door, scrambling to his feet and hauling ass into the field. The gangly pirate and arm-in-a-sling pirate flee thru the clearing just ahead of him. Covering the retreat of his fellows the bandana pirate fires his musket at Nia, narrowly missing, then gathering his musket and falling back.

At last conceding the battle is well and truly lost, the one-eyed pirate curses and begins to run into the field (provoking an opportunity attack from Caillou). All of the pirates are in retreat. One lies unconscious near Barrington, the one he knocked out when he turned the tables on the ambushers. And the ugly one lies slumped against the cabin wall, stone cold dead. D'avard lies unconscious on the floor, slowly reverting to human form before your very eyes.

From behind his stump, Barrington hears the silence fall following the explosion, as the footpads collapse or flee. He does a quick search of the unconscious man near him, rolling him over into a recover position. He takes away any weapons, and anything else of apparent value. When he's done that, seeing that the pirates have apparently fled, Barrington dusts himself off, and slips back into the forest, returning to see Polly.

As he travels, he looks to the sky to see if he can sense the coming dawn. He remembers his appointment. Looks to be another beautiful Nassau morning.

Old Zef grunts his approval as he sees D'Avard go down, he stumps over to the bomb, wooden leg thumping on the wooden floor. Standing over the bomb he watches it for a moment before waving his hands in an intricate manner. Suddenly a large blob of water appears just over the bomb, dropping with a wet hiss over the fuse.

[sblock=OOC]
Class ability: Minor conjuration, 10 pounds of water, which should be approximately 4,563 cc, or 276 cubic inches. Just for reference :) [/sblock]

Nia glances over at the bomb and relaxes a little when it seems (hopefully) to have been dealt with.

She presses the end of her staff against the fallen D'avard's back and pushes him off the door onto the floor...and then keeps it tightly against him. It would give her warning if he was faking it and tried to get up. And, importantly, it let her feel his breathing without actually getting too close.

After a moment, the sea witch nodded, satisfied.

"He lives. Give me a moment to make him safe to travel...we should not stay here now. We'll need rope, and stakes I tink. And someone keep a weapon at his troat while I work, just in case."

(OOC - The plan: Stabilize him (and check for regeneration) and tie him up, while he's covered at sword/gunpoint, then drag him somewhere less compromised for a bit of interrogation. Sound good?)

The globule of water Old Zef conjures readily extinguishes the bomb. In the sudden quiet, you all can hear the sounds of retreating pirates, wind in the palms, and the coo of evening birds.

Upon closer inspection, Nia can see no signs that D'avard is regenerating the various burns, bruises, and necromantic cold-scorches he has endured.

Barrington's quick search of the unconscious pirate turns up a half-filled bottle of spiced dark rum, a pistol, a cutlass (scimitar), and 6 shot and powder.

Old Zef stoops down and picks up the now safe bomb, he checks to make sure the fuse is good and out, then puts in in his pocket. 'Might be handy" he says with a wink.

(OOC - Yup...was hoping someone might take point on where we could go next. :))

Satisfied with her work, Nia looks up at the others. "We need a place to go. Who knows of somewhere safe?"

OOC: Emphatically, yes. :) I had framed the end of the combat, then most of the group went radio silent. Figured end of semester stuff had folks busy?

But if it's a case of "I dunno, I'll wait for someone else to do something" then I am willing to take a harder grasp of the scene as DM and steer you guys. That's not my preference, but I can do it if you all feel it is needed/wanted.

Recap / Scene Framing Post

A betting man would call it 3 o'clock in the morning, the cloudy night sky made it particularly dark.

Barrington, like a guardian angel with a steel-eyed musket, fades back into the jungle, trudging down the slope. The Spanish sniper whose perch he ambushed had two shots in him but was still alive somewhere, having fled into the dark jungle along with the rest of the pirates. Who sent them? Barrington remembered well the rumors that Captain Read Wallace, the man he was to meet at daybreak, had it in for Captain Katerina del Corazón for unknown reasons. These pirates seemed a bit too savage to serve a privateer, however. From the sound of the leader's bravado and bluster, the one called D'avard had some personal stake with du Tourbillon. Could this all be connected to that enigmatic French financier?

After all, they all remembered D'avard's threatening words exchanged with Katerina:
"The Tengu King has a way with spirits. Cap'n has plans for the spirit haunting The Coral Curse. Cap'n won't have du Tourbillon getting to the ship ahead of him."

Barrington reaches the Stuffed Swan inn and slips back into the room where he left Prydwen sleeping (also known as Molly the barmaid). She stirs softly, welcome him back in with a kiss and a murmur. Three hours of shut eye and then Barrington's destiny awaited him at the Nassau docks.

Meanwhile, the rest of you are certain the threat has ended. Shattered glass, splintered wood, a broken door, and multiple bullet holes. Caillou's house-on-the-hill has been shot to hell by the pirates, one of which lies slumped dead against the wall. The leader of the band, the massive muscled tattooed corsair D'avard lies unconscious. Nia Steeleyes finishes binding his hands and feet; of course, given that the man is a seawolf possessed of unearthly strength, a good pair of manacles would be more appropriate.

Along with your effective strategies and overwhelming spell onslaught, duTourbillon's magical message to Katerina helped you win the day. He also had insisted you come to see him at the Colonial Hotel post haste.

How did D'avard find the Tengu King's house? Who was D'avard's captain? What did he want with the Tengu King? And why were they after the djab (dark spirit) haunting The Coral Curse?

Answers might come from questioning D'avard. He would regain consciousness on his own in about an hour, or if one of you skilled in medical knowledge were to apply smelling salts. Should you desire to carry him down the hillside, the man weighs about 210 pounds.

Daybreak is around 6 o'clock.
