Flynn took one more quick look down the passageway, to make sure nothing was sneaking up behind them. Then he stepped forward just far enough to get a view of the cavern ahead, and the ongoing commotion.

He almost wished he hadn't, as the eerie light showed the twisting worm-like beasts. But he had, after all seen worse than that. In the islands, over the years, he had eaten worse things than that...

His right hand swung one pistol up- the left hand followed, a bit less steadily. Both pistols fired almost at the same instant, blowing nearly matching holes in one of the creatures- very small holes, sadly.

Then he stepped back, sliding one pistol into his sash as he began to reload the other...

OOC: Flynn aimed at what grick ? number 1,2 and alpha are the most wounded...

Also, remember both of the bards gave inspiration before entering the cave. It should still be active. It was given to blaise and the second Kat, i think, not Nia like I first though.

Flynn’s shots echo loudly in the sea cave. Gunpowder smoke and sea spray. A good life. Just not for the putrid worm crawling toward Katerina, the bullets punching holes through its soft underside as it clambors over the lashing kelp and fallen stalactices. Just as Katerina has tossed the light stone, artfully sending it clattering over the stones to land between the monstrosities, the worm unfurls the tentacles around its mouth, attempting to catch her, but at the last second Katerina’s reflexes keep her from harm’s way.

Nia's arrow fired directly into the worm's gaping beak goes straight through whatever passes for its brain, causing the worm to lash and coil in on itself spastically as if it is in death throes.

Nursing its wounds, another of the worms eyes the way Etienne is hanging from the “neck” of the large blue worm, and inches forward hungrily, craning its tentacles upward towards Etienne’s feet and shins. Like a sparrow begging its mother for food, if the sparrow was a hiddeous carapace-covered worm of the deeps. Its barbed tentacles cut into his flesh, raking downward and leaving a bloody trail along his lower legs. (10 slashing damage) The worm’s beak snaps at Etienne’s shoes, but at the last second he finds purchase on its beak with his feet, helping him to keep his stranglehold on the mother worm and elevating him from the smaller worm below’s reach.

The last of the monsters, the runt of the squirm of worms, struggles ineffectually to escape Nia’s spell, the kelp only grasping to it tighter the more it struggles.

GM: I assumed Flynn shot at Grick #1, the same one Nia is lining up a bow shot against.

OOC: To hit: Roll(1d20)+0: 15,+0 Total:15; Roll(1d20)+0: 5,+0 Total:5 : With the +6 to hit I got a 21. damage: Roll(1d6)+0: 6,+0 Total:6 +4 strength= 10.

A pin may be better but then the witch bolt will maybe touch me too... As a bonus action I will use a healing word on me Roll(1d4)+0: 3,+0 Total:3 +2 = 5 hit restored. I now have 8 damage points.

Etienne got stymied by the eerie light touching the worm. He nows refrain from further trying to wrestle and stabbed the mother while the child bites him on the leg. Then he remembers what the Innu shaman learned him years ago. He musters spiritual energy from Mother Otter and then the pain softened a little bit and he feels better.

He then stabs the worm once again .

Before the writhing worm at Katerina's feet can wrap about her in its death throes, Flynn's well aimed shot drops it like a sack of potatoes, the worm collapsing over the kelp-covered rocks dead.

As Etienne rises up to bring his tomahawk to bear, he cuts deep through the monstrosity's carapace, black blood smelling worse than fish guts leaks from the wounds his relentless hacking leaves in the creature. Unable to throw him off, the 12-foot long deep blue worm coils about Etienne's body, its tail cracking the pioneer's ribs (10 bludgeoning damage) even as its tentacles flare out to engulf his arm and face, barbs landing deep in his skin (28 slashing damage). Grappling and coiling about one another, the worm thrusts its beak forward into Etienne's stomach (19 piercing damage), attempting to eviscerate him.

GM: I read over the Grappler feat, and it says “You can use your action to try to pin a creature grappled by you. To do so, make another grapple check. If you succeed, you and the creature are both restrained until the grapple ends”. Assuming since Etienne is attacking without disadvantage (a normal effect of being restrained), that he is not restraining the Grick Alpha like we originally thought.

Dice Rolls
Grick Alpha tail attack vs. Etienne AC 12 _: 1D20+7 = [8]+7 = 15 hits
dealing _: 2D6+4 = [1, 5]+4 = 10 10 bludgeoning damage
Grick Alpha tentacles attack vs. Etienne AC 12 _: 1D20+7 = [11]+7 = 18 hits
dealing _: 4D8+4 = [8, 7, 6, 3]+4 = 28 28 slashing damage
Grick Alpha beak attack vs. Etienne AC 12 _: 1D20+7 = [11]+7 = 18 hits
dealing _: 2D8+4 = [7, 8]+4 = 19 19 piercing damage

Total damage to Etienne is 57!

peterka99 If this would kill Etienne (and I think it probably will), you can spend 1 Life to roll 2d6 on the Rolling the Bones Table in the player’s guide (I can look it up if it’s inconvenient for you), which is a representation of swashbuckling providence keeping characters alive in pirate stories since there's no revivify, raise dead, reincarnate, resurrection, or true resurrection spells in the setting. (again, you guys don’t know how many “Lives” you have, I keep that number secret, but each PC began with 1d4+2 Lives, rarely modified by certain Fortunes).

OOC: I looked up Etienne's HP. It's 39. I think this is the first damage he's taken. 39-57=negative 18. Instant death only occurs if the remaining damage exceeds his HP maximum (PHB 197). I think Etienne is unconscious and making death saving throws. The good news is that means we can still heal him and pop him back up. I read the lives house rule as detailing what happens when you actually die not just get knocked to zero. Is that wrong?

GM: He'd taken damage before. I think he was down 8 hp.

But I don't track PC hit points or status effects normally, unless I notice someone being negligent. I have enough on my plate as DM.

EDIT: And yes, you understood the house rules right.

EDIT: And this rule from PHB p.197 / Basic Rules p.76 may also be relevant, depending on which attack drops Etienne to 0 hit points.

GM: Damage at 0 Hit Points. If you take any damage while you have 0 hit points, you suffer a death saving throw failure. If the damage is from a critical hit, you suffer two failures instead. If the damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum, you suffer instant death.

So I *think* what happens (again, I don't track PC hit points) is...

Etienne has 31 out of 39 HP.

The grick alpha makes a Multiattack action, so all damage for purposes of "instant death overflow" are summed up, not accounted for individually, since it's the same action.

Tail Attack deals 10, taking him down to 21 out of 39 HP.

Tentacles Attack deals 28, taking him down to 0 out of 39 HP, with -7 overflow damage.

Beak Attack deals 19 damage. Since he's already at 0 HP, he suffers 1 auto-failure on his death save clock (i.e. 1 failure out of 3 before dying). The overflow damage becomes -26 damage.

Because the overflow is less than his maximum 39 HP, Etienne is knocked unconscious and is bleeding out. He's not dead yet.

Death Saving Throws: When Etienne starts his turn at 0 HP, he rolls a straight d20 as a death saving throw. Three failures = death. Three successes = stabilize. The results of the death save are interpreted thus:
1 = counts as 2 failures (which would kill Etienne since he has 1 failure already from the grick alpha beak attacking him at 0 HP)
2-9 = 1 failure
10-19 = 1 success
20 = he regains 1 HP and therefor stops making death saves

GM: Also peterka99 can I request that you use an online dice roller like everyone else, instead of just posting your own dice rolls? It's only fair. http://www.coyotecode.net/roll/ is a good one, as is http://orokos.com/roll/

OOC: I've done everything I can peterka99. It's up to math to save you now!
For the record though, the house rules on the extra lives have some cool stuff to happen to your pirate if it comes down to it. Easiest way to see the chart is to click the pirate crossbones icon under quickleaf's name. That'll take you to the group page and read house rules.
