Arg! The damage is way higher than what a regular grick gets! . well, of course, i'll use a life. I got a very good Roll:

11. Fortune Favors the Bold
Death/Fatal Event: Do not lose a Life. Instead, something fortunate happens.
Inspiration: Gain advantage (or add your Fame) your check, attack, or save. If this causes a successful hit, you automatically score a critical. In addition, something fortunate happens, like a flying fish leaps from the sea and knocks your foe aside or you slip only to avoid a cannonball striking where you just were standing.
I've done everything I can peterka99. It's up to math to save you now!
For the record though, the house rules on the extra lives have some cool stuff to happen to your pirate if it comes down to it. Easiest way to see the chart is to click the pirate crossbones icon under quickleaf's name. That'll take you to the group page and read house rules.
If you've joined the group, the skull and crossbones should show up under your own name - that goes for any of us. If that makes it easier!
You can also just access it from up above, on the second bar (not the top one) there is a link for COMMUNITY (next to calendar) and the first choice is groups. That will take you right to all your subscribed groups.
So peterka99 I'm not certain whether or not you'd need to use a Life, because I'm not tracking damage/conditions on your PCs – that's just too much bookkeeping for me. That is up to you guys.
You'd only Roll the Bones if Etienne would be killed outright. And I'm not certain that's what happened.
Again, I don't know. You track damage/conditions for your PCs. So you need to tell me.
The Grick stroke me once under 0 HP, so Etienne missed 1 death save throw. He is at minus 18, so he is still alive. But maybe the very good Roll the Bones roll may be used to activate a "free" blade ward cantrip use, so the 57 damage will be 28 and Etienne will still get a positive 3 HP ? Maybe his otter spirit friend granted him more than just healing soothing...
Anyway the melee is over for me. if Etienne is not unconscious next turn because of Grick #2 attacks, he will disengage ...
Otherwise, i'll use the life to be thrown away out of range by the grick and maybe get a positive death save result....
OOC- I've been waiting for Flynn to go, to see if he would heal up Etienne before I attack. I can just attack if we'd like, it has been a while at this point. I'll do it tonight either way.
So, maybe I didn't explain well. The "Rolling the Bones (2d6)" house rule is just for 2 situations: (1) You spend Inspiration, or (2) Your PC would die (as in dead dead, not dying, such as failing 3 death saves or suffering death from massage damage or a spell effect).
In this circumstance, Etienne hasn't died. So his "Lives" haven't been touched yet. He's been knocked out and is making death saving throws just like normal.
IF you were to fail a 3rd death save, yes, then we'd go to "Rolling the Bones (2d6)."
"That isn't how it is supposed to go, boyo!," Flynn called out as he peeked back around the corner at the wreckage the grick had made of the big Frenchman. "Ye're supposed to eat the worm, not the other way 'round! Get back up and try it again!" A pistol shot rang out in the cavern, and one of the other gricks gained a new bullet hole.
And as Flynn stepped back again, he realized that the talk of the worm made him want a bottle of tequila...
