Spell Exchange [Metamagic]
You have greater freedom to decide how many spells of each level to prepare. Spell exchange is available only to wizards.
Benefit: Two spells can be prepared using a single spell slot if their combined level is less than the capacity of that slot. For example, two 2nd level spells can be prepared in a 5th level spell slot. Conversely, a spell can occupy two or more spell slots as long as the combined capacity of the spell slots is greater than the level of the spell. For example, one 5th level spell can be prepared using three 2nd level spell slots. When using a spell enhanced by metamagic, you can use up any combination of spell slots that add up to the level of the enhanced spell. You must be capable of preparing the enhanced spell in the normal way to use this option. For example, you must be able to prepare a 6th level spell to maximize a fireball, but you could then use the Spell Exchange feat to use a 4th and a 2nd level spell slot instead of a 6th level spell slot. For the purpose of this feat, count 0-level spells as if they had a level equal to ½.

Two thoughts: the use of this feat encourages metamagic, and a 1st or 2nd level Ring of Wizardry becomes much more interesting.

Many questions

When looking how this feat stacks up vs. Rary's Mneumonic Enhancer, it really shines. Yes, Ring of Wizardry is good; so is spell exchanging down for crazy amounts of magic missile.

When I saw this feat about a year and a half ago, I thought it had the prerequisite of Spell Mastery, but now that I look again it doesn't. Four of my friends remembered Spell Mastery as being a pre-req as well. Do I have a bad link to the feat?

Does this feat make the wizard too much like the sorceror?
Furthermore, by logical extention of the rules, could you make a metamagic rod of Spell Mastery, since it is a metamagic feat?

(The questions pour forth)

Furthermore, by the basic text of the feat, can a divine caster who takes the feat (by taking a level of wizard) use it for divine spells? The feat says that only a wizard can take it; it does not say that it can't be used on divine spells, although that may be inferred for some.

A spell-exchanging Mystic Theurge would be insane, by the way.

One of my players is going to play a Mystic Theurge tonight, and would like some answers to the questions I've asked. While I can try to interpret designer intent, I am curious if anyone knows the history of this feat. Wizards put it on a special place on their website, but I never really saw any discussion about it, probably because it's been there so long. Hypersmurf and all you fellow Dm's out there, can you help me?

It's been out for over a year. You can try poking around the website, but they change it around a fair bit. I was hoping more people would comment on a WIZARDS OF THE COAST feat, but I guess not.
