spell points in my campaign

i'm using this system for spellcasters in my campaign:

spellcasters have spell points equal to caster level x 3, plus key ability modifier.
spells cost 1 spell point per spell level (0-level spells are free).
i'm using the fatigue and exhaustion option from unearthed arcana (caster is fatigued when spell points reach 50% of total, rounded down; caster is exhausted when spell points reach 25% of total, rounded down).

so, a 1st level wizard with 14 intelligence would have 5 spell points (3+2). it would cost 1 spell point to cast magic missile. the wizard is fatigued when his/her spell points reach 2, and exhausted when the reach 1.

does this seem like enough spell points? at this point, i think it may be a little low...

would love to hear opinions :)

It's too much at low levels, and it won't scale appropriately, so it will be too few points at higher levels.

If you want to do points, just put the cost at 1pt per spell level and then give the Wizard the number of points they would get out of the book for their level. So, a 1st level wizard would get 1 pt, plus any for Int bonus. A 3rd level, normally casting 2 1st and 1 2nd, would get 4 points, enough to cast the 2 1st and 1 2nd, or 2 2nd or 4 1st; and so on.

Probably the best system for spell points is in the Revised Elements of Magic.

hmmm...

i'm looking for a simple mathmatical formula, since the chart in unearthed arcana seemed so random.

caster levelx3?
caster levelx5?
caster level squared?

help!

how about this: at each level, character gains spell points equal to his/her caster level:

level spell points gained total spell points
1 1 1
2 2 3
3 3 6
4 4 10
5 5 15
6 6 21
7 7 28
8 8 36
9 9 45
10 10 55
11 11 66
12 12 78
13 13 91
14 14 105
15 15 120
16 16 136
17 17 153
18 18 171
19 19 190
20 20 210

That would be fine if a 1st level spell cost the same as a 9th, and all other levels in between. If you are going to insist on a formula, then it has to scale with the cost of the spells (assuming that a 1st level spell doesn't cost the same as a 3rd or 5th or whatever level spell).

But the easiest way to get points is just convert the number of spells the caster gets per level each day into a number of points, and multiply those points by the spell levels involved.

A good way to solve the issue of 0 level spells is just allow the caster to cast a number of them per day for free, like caster level +2. So, a 5th level cleric could cast seven 0 level spells per day. Then make any additional 0 level spells after that cost the same as a 1st level spell.
