spell ranges, 3.0 errata

I've spend my morning writing in all the errata to my 3.0 books. What was the purpose behind changing the range of the touch spells to 0 ft rather than just touch?

Not 100% sure but it might have something to do with reach

Perhaps to make it a 'fixed range,' which certain metamagic feats can apply to?
