Spell Resistance Question

Ridley's Cohort said:
Those are often overlooked details. If you see a creature with SR receive healing from another creature that is a good opportunity to drop spells on him: his SR is down until the next round.

I couldn't agree more. However, there are a couple of people in our group that would catch on instantly, and more than likely would lay waste to my poor monster or NPC. :)

How about this situation?

Are you sure you're not all getting tripped up by the fact that Flamestrike is Instantaneous?

How about this situation:

I have SR from whatever source. I cast Cloudkill in a room that I am not in. Later for whatever reason I enter the room. Do I get my SR?

PS I have no books in front of me to check whether Cloudkill is resistable, but any non-instantaneous spell will fit my example.

In response to anon's question:

It appears that a very literal interpretation of the SR rule is favored by the majority on these boards, i.e. if you cast the spell, it can effect you (circumventing SR). So whether it is instantaneous or not does not seem to matter.

Follow-up questions for the literalists...

So, then suppose I'm wearing an item that grants me SR. Does that item somehow know when I walk into the Cloudkill room that I cast it a minute ago and then decide not to protect me?

What if I cast the spell off of scroll? Is this the same situation--if I complete the spell then my SR is down?

What if I am not even aware that I have SR (for example while wearing an item that has not yet been identified)? Does the item incredibly know that I cast the spell and then lower its resistance for me?

It works just like regular SR. Your own SR, no matter the source, never interferes with your own castings.

Yup. The same applies to wands, staffs, etc.

It doesn't matter whether or not you're aware of having SR. It still applies. Unfortunately, if you're not aware that you have SR, that also means that you don't know to lower it to receive beneficial spells from comrades, and that can stink.

See first answer.

Interprete this like shooting through a SF shield. Your spell got out through your defence (Startrek shield) since it's phase and wavelength modulation fit. Other spells that fit can go the other way too.

Hmm. Perhaps someone should research the spell -

Modulate Spell Casting

On a failed Will Save, you modulate the target's harmonic energies to match your own, negating any SR that target has in regards to you.

Hehe. Then you could make the Borcs, an evil half-golem/half-orc race who have shifting SRs.

Man, I come up with stupid ideas when its late ...

If it makes you feel any better, I've tried to edit about 10 posts so far. I just can't hit the quote button the first time!
