Spell to chill an area?

Unattainable Ideal
I thought this would be simple, but I'll be darned -- I can't find a spell that does this.

Wouldn't it be handy (not for adventurers so much but for anyone else pretty much) to have a spell that just reduces the ambient temperature in an enclosed space to just above freezing? Basically a magic refrigerator?

And wouldn't such a spell be pretty low-level? Certainly no higher than, say heat metal, which is a second-level druid spell?

And likewise its opposite: a spell that keeps an enclosed area up around, say body temperature or slightly lower?

Am I missing the obvious spell that does this or is it not "adventurey" enough to be listed?

A few options:

1.) Endure elements will allow you to endure those surrounding temperatures.

2.) Wall of ice, when broken, tends to chill things out when they pass through where the wall was located. Read the description.

3.) In prior editions of the game, there used to be a druid spell for controlling the temperature. It was 4th level. If you can get your hands on 1E or 2E books, you might get some ideas from it.

I've seen many different books that use this spell to chill something down to near freezing, I believe tome and blood was the most recent.

SRD:
Prestidigitation
Universal
Level: Brd 0, Sor/Wiz 0
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: 10 ft.
Target, Effect, or Area: See text
Duration: 1 hour
Saving Throw: See text
Spell Resistance: No
Prestidigitations are minor tricks that novice spellcasters use for practice. Once cast, a prestidigitation spell enables you to perform simple magical effects for 1 hour. The effects are minor and have severe limitations. A prestidigitation can slowly lift 1 pound of material. It can color, clean, or soil items in a 1-foot cube each round. It can chill, warm, or flavor 1 pound of nonliving material. It cannot deal damage or affect the concentration of spellcasters. Prestidigitation can create small objects, but they look crude and artificial. The materials created by a prestidigitation spell are extremely fragile, and they cannot be used as tools, weapons, or spell components. Finally, a prestidigitation lacks the power to duplicate any other spell effects. Any actual change to an object (beyond just moving, cleaning, or soiling it) persists only 1 hour.

Check out Gary Gygax' Living Fantasy, from Troll Lord Games. It is in the chapter on "Practical Magic".

Yes, it is non-"adventurey" and so is ignored in 3.x's "Back to the Dungeon" philosophy.

You will also find spells for a magical "climate control system", by the way.

Thanks everyone. Using prestidigitation would be kind of unweildy -- the wizard has to come by your house every hour to renew the spell. Waking you up at night, disturbing the neighbors...

:D

Is "Living Fantasy" OGC -- that is, could I use those spells in a product for publication?

Thanks folks. Appreciate the help.

Portions are OGC. The book is, in some ways, dual-system for d20 and Lejendary Adventures. The d20 system stats for most things are Open Content, and the spells are specifically mentioned in the OGC declaration on p.160.

Overall, I'd guess about 12-20 percent of the book is OGC, but that's an eyeball estimate.

There's also a spell in Arcana Unearthed called control temperature. Essentially, it's 2nd level, simple, and lasts an hour per level. It can't affect temperatures outside the range of 0 to 110 degrees F, either by changing them or changing to them.

Hopefully that helps either provide a reference point for power levels or you can use it as-is.
