Spellbook cost and gp limits

My group really tries to keep balance by keeping to the gp limits for characters of their level. (Chart in DMG somewhere) My friend is playing a wizard and he has almost no magic items because all of his gp has gone to putting spells into the spellbook.

But when I look at the sample characters in the module I am dming (Lord of the Iron Fortress) I notice that Mailee has a bunch of magic items and they add up to about her gp limit. Her spellbook isn't taken into account at all.

Are wizards supposed to count their spellbook vs. the gp limit of their character level? Any 'official' rulings on this?

The spells you get when leveling are free. But others you have to pay for, and yes it does count towards your money.

A 13th level Wizard has over 100,000gp, yet a 7th level spell only costs 1400gp. It evens out eventually.

There are rules in 'Magic of Faerun' that allow Wizards to pick-up and learn someone elses spellbook so they don't have to spend so much time and money adding all these new spells to their existing books. This is a very good rule for adventuring Wizards as the rest of the party will not want to wait around while the book worm is trying to catch up on his studies.

Care to enlighten us non-MoF owners about that system, as it would make the wizard in my game wet himself if it is useful (and not too unbalanced).

Please? :)

Hi James...
I'm at work right now and do not have the book with me. But if memory serves, it is a spellcheck vs DC 15 + the highest spell level in the book. It also mentions some amount of time reading that is required before you can use the book.

The DC rating may not be correct... and I am sure someone will be correcting me shortly.

Mastering a foreign spellbook requires one tenday/week plus one day per spell in the book, and requires a spellcraft check DC 25 + the highest level spell in the book. Failure means that she must try again when here spellcraft goes up.

Masters and apprentices get a +2 bonus for deciphering eachother's work.

Myself, I use a saner system os spell scribing/copying.

I believe it's DC 25 + highest level actually - a pretty tough roll, especially at lower levels. However, I can't find the amount of time it takes - anyone?
