While it's not a particularly great solution - it does solve the issue of fighters lacking non-combat stuff. They at least have something for that now.
I'm just baffled that anyone thinks this is even a viable solution. To me it look awful. It makes the clunky solutions to primal characters' ACs in 4e look like elegant design!

Even taken on its own terms, how does it work? Because there's no structure - in 5e - to how many checks are required to achieve a goal, and because the bonus is to a check rather than to all checks in a scene or similar, it may turn out to be brokenly strong (only a single check required roll a 7 on the superiority die) or completely pointless (get one bonus to a Stealth check, but then have to do all the rest off your raw DEX).

But what does this have to do with the price of eggs in China?
The butterfly effect. It can change a nature one into a natural 20. If you want to give fighters a new cool ability i am all for it. If you tell me they can’t contribute meaningfully outside of combat then you have Little creativity. And I mean little. Just paying attention to the game and making connects and offering suggestions can be far more meaningful than any die roll outside combat. And a fighter should dominate combat like nobodies business.
