Spellcasting levels retroactively?

OK, here's something I got wondering about. Say you acquire however many levels in a base class that has no spellcasting, then, once you meet the prerequisites, join a PrC that does not have spellcasting as a prereq, but grants increases to spellcaster levels. Then say you join a spellcasting base class later. Do the levels you acquired in your PrC still count towards your spells per day and spells known and the like, even though you gained them before the class that lets you cast spells?

Only levels gained later, in most cases. The language is fairly specific:

When a new loremaster level is gained, the character gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if she had also gained a level in a spellcasting class she belonged to before she added the prestige class.

Some PrCs say "before she added the prestige class level", which is different, but still doesn't help you.

Let's say I am a Fighter 5, who has somehow qualified for a PrC that adds +1 spellcasting level. I take 3 levels of this class, and then I take a level of Wizard.

But Wizard is not "a spellcasting class I belonged to before I added the prestige class". I didn't belong to any spellcasting classes before I added the prestige class. So Wizard is not a valid choice of a class to which I can add those spellcasting levels.

Check the specific PrC, because the language may be different, but in general, that's how it will work.

What happens if a Fighter 2/Human Paragon 3 retrains (PHB2) his second fighter level into a cleric level -- do the Human Paragon +1 SL things now apply?
