Now we are talking! Didn't they have one about apocalypses? Or is it apocalypsi?
Okay, now you've done it. Now you made me dig it out of The Pit.

Okay, there is a 15th level spell, and the most powerful in the book, called Greater Apocalypse. It has some rather steep requirements to cast, but if you can manage it - scratch one world. There are other spells that are somewhat more... moderate in their approach, but will still get your point across. Enslave the Sky, Entropy Unbound, Doom Inexorable, Blight, Open Gate, Knell of Darkness.... If your world is a tough nut to crack, these are definitely your nutcrackers. :p

Cheers!

I'm guessing you're referring to the Armageddon Device... ;) Yes, I was quite happy with that one. It's about as devastating as it gets, with equally devastating spell component requirements. Gotta have balance... :)

I am indeed, and here's hoping we will see more of that in the future . I really like the approach you've taken in DL.

Only when discussing RPGs would you need to know the plural of apocalypse! :D

Yep, those rocket-propelled grenades sure do some nasty damage, with with that they're designed to inject a jet of molten copper into a tank hull.

What is the pit? Sound interesting.

Global Warming and Ice Age, both epic, have 100 MILE radii. They are in Sandstorm and Frostburn, respectivly. Lots of other good ones, like raising a permanent volcano.

Most DnD damage spells are the tacticle variety, and so won't immitate a plague or a nuke very well. Cloudkill does nicely for gas attacks, though.

It wouldn't be hard to attach a contagious effect to the spell Contagion... everyone who comes into contact with the diseased person has to make the same save or fall ill. Pretty mean spell, if you ask me.

But if you're looking for city-wide destruction, nothing spells loving like ELEMENTAL SWARM and STORM OF VENGANCE... send some Fire elementals to burn buildings with some storm force winds blowing through the city and the whole place will be burning down within minutes; make the Chicago fire look like Bubba's Backward Bar-B-Que. That's really why cities have peace treaties with druid groves. :)

I'm in good spirits today, so here is the armageddon device spell for you in all its glory. Note that magic in Dark Legacies is demonic, rooted in the Abyss, thus all spells require rare and/or morally questionable spell components. The AD spell is an extreme case. It also requires 8 people to cast, yet even with the benefit of cooperative casting, would be extremely difficult to cast using the Dark Legacies magic system, as it should be. Cheers.

Armageddon Device
[Fire]
Availability: Lost
Level: 9
Cooperative: 8
Components: V, M
Strain: 9d4 nonlethal, 2d4 Int damage, 1d6 Str drain, 1d4 Wis drain; all casters involved suffer the full spellcasting strain
Casting Time: 1 day
Range: 100 miles
Area: See text
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None

The area of effect of the Armageddon Device is spectacular: a black glass crater 100 feet deep and 500 feet wide marks the center of the blast radius and everything within 1 mile is incinerated (1000d6 damage); everything out to 2 miles takes 100d6 damage; everything out to 5 miles takes 40d6 damage; and everything out to 7 miles takes 10d6 damage. Damage inflicted is half fire damage and half regular damage. The affected landscape becomes inert, never again spawning life.

Material Component: The Armageddon Device is an actual construct that must be built. Only after it has been built and placed at the desired target is the rest of the spell cast. The casing of the device is a 3 ft. diameter perfect sphere formed out of pure gold (10,000 gp value), split into two haves. Within each sphere half is a central chasm intersected by eight spokes that connect it to an outer ring, which in turn is composed of smaller chasms connected by conduits. The still-beating heart of a newborn demon must be placed in the center chasm. In each of the outer chambers must be placed the heart of a child that was born to one of the casters. When the device has been built and the proper components inserted, the two halves are riveted shut.

Additionally, the spell requires a smaller object (6 inch diameter) that exactly matches the Armageddon Device (500 gp value).

Casting Process: Once placed, the Armageddon device can be detonated from 100 miles away. The casters stand in a circle around the smaller device, their position matching that of their children’s hearts in the sphere. As they continue to recite the spell’s invocations, both the ritual device and the actual Armageddon Device begin to generate heat and light. When the spell completes, the ritual device blinks out of existence. If the spell was successful, the Armageddon Device detonates to full effect. If it was cast to completion but failed, the device still explodes, but only deals 20d6 damage out to 500 feet.

Well, Gate is nice to just summon a really powerful fiend (like a balor) if you cast proctection from Evil on yourself before hand and then let the demon/devil go wild on whatever location you are in.

Mongoose's Encyclopedia Arcane: Necromancy: Beyond the Grave has some very powerful (non-epic) undead creation spells, like one that allows a necromancer to animate an entire dead city into skeletons and zombies. It requires incredible amounts of XP though, so you might want to consider the optional Power Components rule in the DMG.

Not a great idea, since the Balor isn't 'summoned', he is really there... and so he would ignore your protection from evil. The prot/evil wouldn't protect you from his blasphemies and destructions either!
