SPELLS & SPELLCRAFT: The Greatest d20 Rulebook? YES!!!

UK, you didn't do wrong. I was just commenting on the evolution of the thread. It's interesting to watch threads switch subjects. And lets face it I think the WPS is only slightly less anticipated by us gamers then the ELH. :D

WHAT?! There's ERRORS in this book? Boo! I demand a refund! :D

I figured the Claws of the Demon was listed at the wrong level, LOL, and those rope monster stats were really screwed up! Otherwise, hardly any errors (compared to WoTC books).

Good job! And fast, too! :)

Kaptain - Hey, thanks for posting up about S&S! After reading your posts yesterday, I was intrigued by some of the info and picked up the book after work.

I flipped through it last night, and while I won't use ALL of the information, there were some good ideas that I can use piecemeal.

Probably would have passed on it without a closer look without your thread ;)

Yeah, I probably won't use all of it either, but I like having more options, and S&S really does deliver on that front, moreso than any other D&D book I've seen. Glad my review helped win you over. I could tell it was going to useful just on a first flip-through, but it kept blowing my mind with each new section (spells not included, LOL). I *almost* did my "I love Spycraft" underwear dance, except I was at a friend's house and his wife and kids wouldn't have liked that very much. :D

As far as the spells go, a lot of them are low level utility spells, like "I put my spellbook back on the shelf telekinetically." There are a few really fun, scary spells, like "Pack of Ghouls" (Clr 4) which summons up 3d4 ghouls to do your evil bidding for 1 round/level. Some of the spells have cool names like "Malediction of Razors" but aren't that good once you get past the title. :)

If you're buying S&S for new spells, you will be disappointed, IMO. If you're buying it to mine for new ideas and inspirations for all spellcasting characters and how magic works in general in your game, you should be both impressed and delighted with your purchase! :)

Well Kap, just curious did you get Book of Eldritch Might II? If so, think you can make a comparision to the variant bard in there to the one in S&S?

The S&S versions are easier to use/integrate (just minor tweaks to PHB version). The BoEM II one is certainly interesting, but I'm not sure how much power is gained/sacrificed by taking away their spells and replacing them with spellsongs. I didn't study the BoEM II version as closely (not being a bard fan in the first place). :)

That was one of mine. :) I did the section on magical libraries, and I included a bunch of spells which might be used by the people running the library to make their job easier -- Quill, Restore Page, Summarize, etc. I think they would have worked better in the library section than in the spells section, just because the utility of them is more obvious in that context. They are 'flavor' magic, but I like those sorts of spells -- how mand different ways are there to reduce someone's hit points, anyway?

(My wife is a librarian; a lot of the library spells were based on her suggestions.)

Lizard: Your spells would probably have been best presented in the context of the library section... flavor spells are nice in theory, but I don't see these spells seeing much use, if any, in-game--especially from a PC perspective. Honestly, these spells were a substantial part of what killed my enthusiasm for the spells section in S&S. There were too many (more than one being too many in my mind). Like most players and DMs, I want new ways to reduce my enemies' hit points, buff my allies and do cool things that amaze and frighten. Flavor spells above 0-level will probably never be taken. Would you rather have fireball or restore page in your arsenal?

Your libraries section, however, was top-notch! :)

Guess that depends...

...if I have a horde of Orcs run at me, screaming and swinging their clubs, or if I did the Indiana Jones down a waterfall and my DM told me that my spellbook didn´t make the save this time... :p
