Spells that should be rituals or cantrips.

I think it would be interesting that if you prepare the original version of the spell and expend it during the ritual, you gain a benefit while casting the ritual.

Good ideas Kzach. I like the idea of at will defense spells - it is kind of like using mage hand (or whatever it is called in DDN) to slightly/weakly deflect attacks. I also agree that some spells should only be rituals or should have some mechanical advantage when used as rituals. I just dont like to see the opening locks or deciphering runes with a wave of the hand.

I disagree on the opening locks. My wizards have been opening locks with a wave of a hand for a long time, I don't want that to change, especially considering I've been using up one of my spells slots to do it.

Rituals:
Identify
Knock
Circle of Protection
Raise Dead
Animate Dead
Bless
Mage Armor

Cantrips:
Spectral Hand

That's all I can think of right now.

Of course, Wish should have a cantrip version.

Amongst spells that deserve to do double duty as normal spell/ritual, I nominate Feeblemind. Either use as a straight out weapon, or use as a ritual during interrogations. "If you don't answer our questions, Mr Evil Wizard, you'll be using nothing but baby talk for the rest of your days once he's finished."

It's called Prestidigitation. I know you were joking, but I've actually heard it called a "little wish".

I'll agree with most of these, but isn't Bless a short duration effect? A few rounds at most.

Also, IIRC, Spectral Hand allows you to deal touch spells at range. Probably too good for a cantrip.

Actually I could easily see Spectral Hand being a cantrip. Cast it once and it affects the next spell you cast only. Two turns to cast a ranged spell as a touch spell isn't something I'd have an issue with as a DM.

Of the ones I've seen so far...

Alarm: spell or ritual
Arc lightning: spell
Burning Hands: spell
Charm Person: spell
Comprehend Languages: spell or ritual
Continual Light: spell
Detect Magic: cantrip
Grease: spell
Hold Person: spell
Light: cantrip
Mage Hand: cantrip
Magic Missile: spell (another magic attack, ray of whatever, for the cantrip)
Mirror Image: spell
Ray of frost: plain damage cantrip, rework rest into slow spell
Shield: spell
Shocking Grasp: spell
Sleep: spell

Read Magic and Prestidigitation would be two more cantrips

From a legacy point of view I can see the importance of this. But I would like to see the thief or skill monkey the best lock picker - not the wizard. Maybe get knock to give an advantage to next attempt to open the door or comp languages a bonus to lore skill attempts.

Likewise detect and read magic are spells that step on the toes of skills in my view.

All in all, despite the legacy of spells in D&D I would like to see something different in the way DDN uses magic in conjunction will skills - so would like to see more interaction between the skill system and the magic system.
