[Spells] When a barbarian gets religion...

I was thinking about skipping ahead a few levels in the game I DM (the players are bored of the current plotline; it's my fault, I think), but had a problem. Here's some background; skip to te last paragraph if you don't care.

The barbarian in the group met a wandering priest some time ago, who convinced him to reject his former ways and join the clergy. Funny though it is to think of a 9'2" (long story) half-orc in white acolyte robes, the character decided to go that route.

After taking a single level in cleric, he went on an adventure (with the church's blessing); since he had neither the depth of formal training nor the aptitude, he advanced as barbarian in that time. I thought this was for the best, as his character is unsuited, statwise, for the role - he can't cast spells with that Wisdom!

More recently, though, the character has come back to more civilized lands and is set up near a major temple to Kord, his patron. The player took another level in cleric, and has made it clear that he wants to go the cleric route all the way.

Other than the spell problem, the character is well-suited for his role in the church - he's a paragon of strength and has been doing his best to fulfill his clerical duties.

Right now, the group is on a quest from the Church for a talisman which, among other things, would raise the character's Wisdom enough to cast spells.

Here's my quandry: If I'm going to let them skip ahead a few levels, I'll need to pick his spells. What low-level spells are still useful on higher levels? He'll be a Clr6/Bbn11.

What do you mean by picking him spells? Are you choosing the spells that the cleric will have "memorized" for that day?

Yes, I'm picking the spells he will typically prepare. The player's not that great with spells; i'm not sure if he'sever played a caster before.

What's his Wisdom? How many levels are you skipping ahead?

He was a Bbn11/Clr2 with Wis 9; now he's a Bbn11/Clr6 with Wis 14 (+1 on 16th level, +4 enhancement).

Cleric Spells Prepared (5/4/4/2):
Domain Spells (Kord/Luck and Strength):

Clerics get their entire spell list. There is no reason for him to select the spells that he got at lower level...he gets them all as soon as his wisdom and level qualify him.

Here's what I suggest:

0th: Guidance (x2), Resistance (X2), Virtue
1st: Divine favor(x2), Doom, Shield of Faith
2nd: Bull's Strength, Endurance, Shatter (x2)
3rd: Dispel Magic, Searing Light

I know that. What I mean is this - his cleric level is low in comparison to his character level. Which spells will still be helpful?

Thanks! A few questions, if I may?

How useful will dispel magic be on this level? He'll only have a +6 vs. a +19 or so.

What if he had, say, a +4 belt of giant strength? Which spell is a good substitute for bull's strength?

Dispel Magic is just one of those you should have at least one of. Sure, his chances are not really good for dispelling something, but they are better then if he didn't have the spell at all.

Instead of Bull strength, Aid would be pretty good. Basically, with the spells, I selected ones that would help him out in combat and take advantage of his already combat ability.
