Spellthieves and the Ability to Cast Spells

Hi, fellow spell stealing subjects out there!

Is the requirement to have "the ability to cast i.e. 1st-level spells" fullfilled by a spellthief who can steal 0- to 1st-level spells via the steal spell class feature? [generally and looking towards prestige classes]

Thanx for your consideration.

I don't know, what does the class description says? Does it have a "spellcasting" paragraph in the description? If the Spellthief "steals" a spell, I guess he can retain it for some time and cast it later, does this work as any normal spellcasting (except that there are no slots/day limit)?

I'd say yes, but only as long as he has the stolen spell. It's sort of like putting on a +6 Str item to qualify for Power Attack. He can do it, but he loses anything it's based on whenever the condition isn't true.

Hmmm, but it isn't sufficient to build a PrC upon it, I guess?

Thanx

Since PrC prereqs are only 'checked' once, that interpretation would allow you to qualify with Spellthief.

If you do not qualify for a PrC anymore at any time after picking it up, you lose the benefits of the PrC.

Bye
