Sphere of Creation

As I was glancing through my copy of the DMG this afternoon, it seemed to me that most of the artifacts detailed in the last few pages of the book have opposites. For every Book of Vile Darkness there's a Book of Exalted Deeds. For every Talisman of Ultimate Evil there's a similar artifact of good. There's a sword of Kas and a shield of Prator - each the seeming opposite of the other.

Yet, some of the artifacts lack that balace. Although I might be interested to see what the "opposite" of a deck of many things would be like, what I was really wondering was this:

What does the "opposite" of a Sphere of Annihilation do? Or rather, what would it do? How could it come into being?

Do you have such a thing in your own campaigns? What are they like?

Fill me in!

I think you answered your own question. A deck of many things does lots of things to make things happen. A sphere of annihilation makes things not exist. I find that a nice balance.

I was just reading about Planar seeds in Mongoose: Classic: Book of the Planes -- create a demi-plane with a seed created by positive energy
tendrils striking negative energy tendrils --- sounds like a good
counter to sphere of annihilation.

As to Deck of Many Things, wasn't there a Deck of Fools or something
in an issue of Dragon? Or am I thinking of the Tarot of Many Things (or
both!)? I think old school D&D had the Deck of Illusions which was
kind of like a counterpart --- hard reality v. illusion, I would guess.

Hmmm... IIRC from the 1e DDG, the mother goddess (whose name escapes me... Ilmater?) had a sphere upon which was written the spells of creation. It's something I put into one of my game.

I have a certain fondness for it. Perhaps I'll throw it in my campaign again.

Heh. This brings back some memories ... I set the Wayback Machine for 1983, break out my old campaign binder, to reveal a spell:

Fixed Sphere of Creation (evocation) reversible

level: 9
Range: 3"
duration: permanent
components: v,s,m
casting time: 3 turns
save: n/a (negates)
area of effect: 3 inch diameter sphere

This spell creates a small blue sphere which is fixed in space. Once per hour, it will create an object, which will emerge in minature form from the sphere and then grow to normal size. Roll once on the following table to determine what is created:

1 treasure (use DMG table)
2-4 monster (use wandering monster table, level 1d10)
5 miscellaneous mundane item
6 normal weapon or armor
7-8 nothing

The material component for this spell is a small blue gem worth at least 5,000 gp.

The reverse of this spell, fixed sphere of annihilation, creates a fixed 3 inch diameter black sphere, which will destroy anything it touches that fails to save versus spells at -2 (see also sphere of annihilation in the DMG). The material component is a black opal worth at least 5,000 gp.

A fixed sphere of annihilation will negate a fixed sphere of creation, and vice versa.

Maybe things that fall into a sphere of anihilation elsewhere pop-out whole and hearty from a sphere of creation. This might seem random to an observer when it is in fact a function of what falls in from the other side. :)

I was actually thinking much the same - well, if it comes up, this might be a worthy subject for a mini adventure....
