Spiked Chain Rules?

The leap that trips with weapons are touch attacks.

Well, from what everybody has posted in this thread, we have learned these things...

1) Trip attacks use a melee touch attack.
2) Using a spiked chain, you cannot make a melee attack, deal damage, and also try to trip because that is what Improved Trip is for.

So apparently, a trip attack with a spiked chain is a melee touch attack, not a regular attack that can deal damage, as I originally thought.

I've scoured the PH, the DMG, S&F, MotW, and none of them say that. The spiked chain merely states that you can trip with it, and a trip is started with a melee touch attack.

Does the opponent get an opportunity to grab the chain if you don't attempt the trip?

Why would he? If you're just making a melee attack, he doesn't get to do anything but stand there and hope you don't hit him.

Furthermore, if you have multiple attacks in the round can you attempt to trip more than one foe?

I would assume so, based on your BAB. The same thing applies to grapples.

When you make a trip attack with a Spiked Chain you do not do any damage.

To do that you would need the Knock Down feat from Sword and Fist

All trip attacks are touch attacks.

With the spiked chain you deal lethal damage AND get a chance to trip if you want to...

Where do you make that leap?

You can use a Spiked Chain to make a trip attack, but that is instead of a normal attack.

Does the opponent get an opportunity to grab the chain if you don't attempt the trip?

No.

Furthermore, if you have multiple attacks in the round can you attempt to trip more than one foe?

Aluvial

Yes. Or you can attempt to trip the same foe multiple times.

Thanks to you all!

I have a player right now that is using this weapon, and has caused almost nothing but problems when it has come to combat.
All the questions that he and I have been debating about have now been answered. Thank you once again.

damn, didn't know there was so much misunderstanding about trip:)

Yeah, its a touch attack to trip, and it doesn't do damage.

Any else feel that the SC is a little too good? I mean every weapon has its + and - but I've always thought the SC got just about everything.

I used to think it was awfully good (not in a bad way), but now its nowhere near as cool. Ah well.

I feel it gives you exactly what it should for a 2-handed exotic weapon. Really, what more does it give you than a more useful reach and the ability to make trip attacks? That seems to be about worth 1 feat. You get almost the same benefit with Guisarme without spending a feat. The guisarme doesn't threaten at 5 feet, no bonus for disarming, but it has a better critical and it doesn't cost a feat.

Oriental Adventures has many similar weapons, although all of those can only be used as a double weapon OR a reach weapon each round. I think it's a fairly reasonable weapon with that restriction added.
