I was told once, as a young girl, that "girls can't make sound effects." As such, I have spent a large portion of my life attempting to perfect various sounds. I'm still not as good as the guys, but I've got talent for a woman. :D

In the end - I think that it's a guy thing b/c girls just aren't quite as good at it. Something in our genetic makeup prevents us from being the masters of replicating non-human sounds... But - that's made up for with our soft skin and silky hair. :p
I don't think there's anything genetic about it; I think it's cultural. Think about the kinds of games you played as a little kid. I was lucky enough to have a sister fairly close in age to me; and comparing how we played, I think I unconsciously learned how to do sound effects at an extremely young age. My 20-mo already does some pretty impressive ones. My daughter has no interest in doing sound effects, aside from maybe a meow, or a pony sound now and then.

I don't

Because I lack the talent.

I did game with one DM who liked to put it all sorts of sound effects....

Whenever we encountered monsters in the process, of, ummm, well, copulating in an orgy of lust that a viagra & vodka sponsered Spring Break party would be hard put to live up to.

We encountered this waaaaayyyyy to often (I know realize the DM had issues).

But, he would go into very specific detail & his sound effects of slapping fleash made you feel like you were, indeed, overlooking the Troll Orgy.

It happened so often, we actually had a set plan for how to attack. We'd wait till things began to approach a climax (not that way! OK, sometimes that way) & then we unleash our concenterated ranged attacks while all the monsters were distracted. Then storm in, weapons drawn while the monsters still had their pants down (so to speak).

Also the DM had a favorable 'called shots' house rule (this was in 2nd ed) where you took a -4 penalty to hit, but could call you shot if you hit. As we got high enough, the -4 was no big deal. So, we decided to call our shots (remember that whole pant's down analogy?). Three rounds of "Called Shot Genitals" and those hill giants were scrambling to surrender in order to save their 'gianthood'.

Yet, for some reason, we KEPT RANDOMLY ENCOUNTERING CREATURES MATING.

My wife makes truly hilarious sound effects when DMing. My favourite is her Injured Goblin noise, which is a sort of high-pitched cartoonish squeak; the other recent highlight was the Song From a Dwarf Bar, which must have been 100% improvised, but included this little instrumental bit which was so funny that I literally fell off my chair.

I think making good sound effects is a confidence thing.

whenever one of the enemies ran in or through the creek, I made splish-splash sounds. Just trying to keep the ambience up.
That last sentence is my attempt to cover up the fact that I don't think I could *not* make sound effects if I tried.

It's not that I'm good at it. Just that I do it. Like when I made the blaster sounds for my Star Wars action figures at 10 years old. But thinking on it, I can't remember ever hearing women make such sound effects.

Playing with a toy horse ("pony" in girl-speech), I'd make the whinnying sounds and galloping sounds. I've never heard girls do that.

Back when I was a kid, boys had to learn to do sound effects! We had these cool toys like X-wing fighters and Tonka trucks (metal ones! Able to slice your hand open, not these wussy plastic things they call Tonka trucks these days!) that either made no noise at all, or if they did it was some weak little buzzing sound. What fun would it have been playing with these and making no noise?

Now, the girls, they usually played with their dolls. They got really good at doing voices; mother voice, prince charming voice, baby voice. They didn't worry as much about sound effects because for them it was all about talking.

In general I have found few women who do sound effects in gaming (I can think of one who was great at it, she was a very descriptive DM). In contrast, I have found more women who do NPC voices than men.

My daughter does sound effects for her toy animals all the time. But, yeah, men definitely do this more than women. It's probably an artifact of that whole "act like a lady" garbage. :)

I had a woman GM who did quite good sound effects, but I was actually voted DM With Best Sound Effects in my high school club :D

Man that was a long time ago...

My wife made some sound effects the other nigh...

Oh wait. Nevermind.

Seriously, I haven't ever really paid any attention to this. It's would make an interesting master's thesis. Someone get cracking on that!

I don't recall making sound effects in games myself. I don't recall anyone doing that, actually. I'll have to pay more attention.

I make sound effects. When I was little, I did voices for my dolls, barbies or my little ponies. I made animal sounds whenever animals were making sounds. Today, I still make sound effect for lots of things. Not so much that I think it's a hallmark of my DMing, but just sounds. Monster sounds, weapon sounds, and sounds from the environment, like falling water or rocks etc etc. My best sound is probably my duck quack, but I really like the vaugley wookieish sound that I use for just about any large animal that I don't know the regular sound for, like a the Dire Sloth.
