Splitting Puddings

So that all the characters have one of their own!

Hi All,

As per the 3.5 SRD, black puddings have the following property:
"Split (Ex)
Slashing and piercing weapons deal no damage to a black pudding. Instead the creature splits into two identical puddings, each with half of the original’s current hit points (round down). A pudding with 10 hit points or less cannot be further split and dies if reduced to 0 hit points. "

Now, does this mean literally split into two puddings of the same size? Same attack bouns and damage/abilities/size?

I think yes, but I may also be having some edition fugue, because a small part of me says that they halve in size each time.

1. Puddings are spread out with extra mass making them thicker['taller'], as it splits they get shorter. Been that way for 30 years.

2. It would take a lot of work to stat the pudding as it changes size categories. It would take a top down rebuilding of the creature as was done with the Ogre Mage and as I believe is being done with a few other clunky or problematic monsters. If that much trouble is being made to change the monster, I say those grabbed by the pudding should have a small pudding “attached”, once they escape the grab& the split should only be caused by heavier melee hits, with arrows and such sinking harmlessly into the mass.

3. Fireball is a 20’ radius. A pudding that got even weaker as it split could be taken out even more easily than they are now. Currently, there is still a threat from a halved pudding or three.

A question.

When a pudding splits, Is the new pudding placed adjacent, in a random direction, to the original puddings space? Or does it start in the original puddings space, and then is shunted over far enough, in a random direction, to use the squeezing rules since that is the closest legal placement?

Accidentally Ending Movement in an Illegal Space
Sometimes a character ends its movement while moving through a space where it’s not allowed to stop. When that happens, put your miniature in the last legal position you occupied, or the closest legal position, if there’s a legal position that’s closer.

Closest Creature
When it’s important to determine the closest square or creature to a location, if two squares or creatures are equally close, randomly determine which one counts as closest by rolling a die.

We've always played that it is in the same space, and one is then shunted out randomly adjacent.

Thanks for the replies so far - it is going to get crowded in there.

However, I note the handy climb speed . . . fiendish puddings hanging off the walls and ceiling should be entertaining :]

Don't forget to consider the Higher Ground bonus on attack rolls. I think it's obvious to allow it for one hanging on the ceiling, and I'd probably also do it for one hanging on the wall if it's actually up higher than the target.

hehehe
