[Spoiler] "Who killed Wormtongue?"

First Post
Some of my friends and I were playing the Lord of the Rings Trilogy Trivial Pursuit game one of them had gotten for Christmas, and one of the questions was "Who killed Grima Wormtongue?" We were all kind of stumped about that one, since that scene wasn't in the movies, and, for better or for worse, that's what the game is based on (much to our dismay).

The answer? Legolas. Now, I'm not looking to have a debate about the various points where the movies strayed from the books, but, Legolas? Either that question was a misprint on the card, or something weird is going to happen in the ROTK Extended. Anyone have any idea?

In the book, Wormtongue cuts down Saruman in the shire, and a couple of angry hobbits shoot him as he tries to run off. If a parallel situation happens in the extended edition, when Gandalf and co approach Orthanc, the only archer around at the time is Legolas.

Yeah, it'd be kind of weird to have a bunch of Hobbits pop out of nowhere and shoot Wormy-boy as he's running off.

Well, it's bit complictaed but Dobby kills Wormtounge as he is being distracted by Jar Jar.

(Ahem)

I saw a production still several months ago where Saruman was impaled on a spike at the base of Isengard. Perhaps in the extended edition Wormtounge pushes Saruman off the balcony. At that point the only person able to reach Wormtounge would be Legolas with an arrow.

It also occurs to me that in the book, Wormtongue threw the palantir at Gandalf. Legolas could also have shot at him for that, though that would prevent Grima from offing Saruman, I suppose.

I suspect the likely sequence of events to be: Saruman and Gandalf argue; Grima throws the palantir at Gandalf; Saruman and Grima fight about that, Grima kills him; Legolas picks Grima off.

Oh my.

I hope that's a misprint. if PJ left the scene at Orthanc with Saruman & Grima holed up in the tower, I really don't want to see him vary it by having Grima killed there by Legolas or anyone else.

Have you seen the movie? That "If PJ..." threw me off. Yes, he does leave it that way in the theatrical release, but I'm pretty sure he's already said that the death of saruman will be handled somehow in the extended RotK.

Seen it twice. :)

By the "if PJ" statement, I meant that if in the uncut scene PJ left it that way (Saruman holed up, etc.). As it was in the theatre, it's cut to look like Gandalf never spoke to Saruman and the palantir had just "ended up" in the water. Obviously some things happened between Gandalf et al's arrival and Pippin grabbing the stone that will be seen in the EE. It just seems a big change between the versions to leave 2 relatively major characters alive in one version and kill them off in another. I'm not sure how it'll play out in the EE, I guess we just have to wait & see.

As with all rumors, take this for what it's worth. I last heard that the extended version of RoTK will include the "scouring of the shire", but that Saruman will not be there. If PJ decided to kill him off at Isengard, then that would make sense.

Of course, if PJ did so, that's just another reason to be irritated over unnecessary plot changes in the movies...
