Sporting Foot and Base Balls

Let's try a definition exercise.

Pick a type of ball, (or five), from any sport and identify its characteristics without any reference or use of the sport.

Is the ball round? Does it bounce? Is it soft? Is it hard? Is it stitched?

Describe the ball in any way, in as much detail or generality as you can, but not with the sport.

(And, although I am currently engaged in a discussion about how I do not think that the terms "football" or "baseball" are acurate ways to describe these balls, please do not troll the thread by pointing that out!)

Oh no, not another "let's compare balls without ball-warring" thread! The ball-(myth)-busting agenda has been worked enough. With all due respect, ball-comparison threads are beginning to bore the heck out of me.

For some strange reason I always find it amusing when a conversation turns to balls.

These balls are kept in a sack... no, wait.

This guy Hairy- aargh, better not.

These balls are as smooth as... GLARGH DON'T GO THERE!!

Damn it, this thread is harder than I thought.

I am a ball, just like so many other balls...

All perfect i started, years ago...

And like so many other balls, i get used and abused...

Yet nowadays people like me all bruised and beaten up...

Never will i get to see my perfect, lean face again...

For people say that i revolutionized aerodynamics in this sorry state!

what am I??

hmmm....

now a... (perhaps) more difficult one...

I am... well known... i'd say... as a ball...

...even though i change shape oversees...

my great great great grandfather....

was some part of an actual grandfather...

what am I?

Oh, come on, you can't have a discussion about balls before you define what a ball is! For our purposes, do balls have to be spheres, or are oblate spheroids allowed? And, if you allow oblate spheroids, why not other arbitrary shapes? Then we're down the slippery slope of having teddy bears be "balls"....
