[Spycraft] Modern Arms Guide

SILVER SPRING!

Wow, Silver Spring, I work in Silver Spring. And to tie this to the thread, I plan on buying the Guide, did you get it at Dream Wizards or is there a good store closer to Silver SPring?

Still, I didn't get a chance to look at it deeply (there were a pack of rugrats in the store heading towards the checkout, each with something, and I wanted to leave before the store closed), and have one question. Is the damage aimed at d20 Modern games, or regular d20, or both?

d20 modern tends to be lower, since it uses the WP/VP system. Regular d20 tends to be higher.

Well, Spycraft uses the HP/VP system, but I think there is no real difference in damage ratings. There certainly shouldn't be. The purpose of having VPs is not to change the damage caused by weapons, but to make the weapons more deadly (or have the potential to be more deadly) so altering the damage ratings depending on whether you were using HPs or HP/VP would be kind of strange, wouldn't it? I don't know.

But, to answer the question: Spycraft uses HP/VP, so I guess the numbers are oriented to that system.

Sanguine has/will put out a book on modern weapons for use in the d20 system. Over 800 firearms are being put into it and detailed from the 1900s models all the way up and to today. All fully equipped with mods and add-ons! Thats the book i want..guns..lots of guns..

That's another book I can't wait to get my hands on either. Though wish the MAG was a little more like Pallidums Book of Contempary Weapons, where they show off the guns, it's been a well read. I was dead set when I first read Initative Damage, but I have changed my mind, and I will use it. Though some of the items I know for sure I won't use are COC (Condition Of Carry) for weapons, the 5/10 Step for Diagonal Movement, damage for items, and recoil. Damage to items, if a Laptop get's shot, it's dead, I'll just roll and see if the hard drive got creamed, and ok, his armor took this much damage, ok, it's no longer of use, though my players don't use armor :-) .

Although the damage for some weapons seems low, the additional abilities of the weapon are well worth it, like Take Down, Whisper lock and such.

Me being a player in an online Spycraft game (Kareem Amirr), it seems like this book might be a good buy. The Triggerman prestige class sounded interesting; is it balanced?

Also, are the weapons balanced? I mean, how does a Colt .45 compare to, uhhhh, another .45?

Is Triggerman balanced? I'm not 100% sure since I don't use prestige classes, but I think the abilities fit with the other class abilities. Halving the price of all firearms for the team and tripling their ammo allotment at level 7 seems a bit much, but... It's probably okay by that point.

The weapons are balanced, IMO. A Colt .45 does the same damage as any other .45 pistol, but it is a bit more reliable than others. They went with calibre as a guide to damage, so weapons firing the same ammo are going to do the same amount of damage. The differences are in modifications you can make, error and threat numbers, recoil (optional), etc.

Is any mention made to ammunition types?

Caliber relating to damage is okay, but what about the difference between ball and hollow point .45?

Tracer rounds?

Subsonic silencer loads?

Anything on FN's 5.7mm rounds?

Mods are one thing, but alot of different real world differences are obtained by using different types of ammunition. I'd rather go after a guy in a vest with a FiveseveN than a .357 or a .38 ... a subsonic round isn't as effective and has a shorter range, but if you're going to use a silenced weapon, that's what you're loading out.

These are covered in the "core" spycraft rule book.

To the posts that kindly didn't say: "Duh, what are you, a moron?" ... thanks.

I've been meaning to take a look at Spycraft. My curiosity is piqued by this book and the game, so I'll probably buy them when I'm off in a town with a games store tomorrow.
