D&D 4E SRM Marking Marked and Other 4Eisms

You know probably the gaming feel comes from the actual name, "marking" I bet if they called it "tracking" or some such instead it would feel better.

As for ranged thing, that could work too, actually show the beginning of a ranged defender character. Though imagine some marks would probably only capable within close-range (once we see the mechanics we can tell how many are ranged how many close).
Uh, NO, the gamist feel does not come from the name. That's silly. The gamist feel comes from the mechanics of it, and the term "marking" isn't necessarily gamist anyway. Though I'd expect the term to accompany a bounty hunter or assassin class rather than defenders in general.

I don't think marking will be that bad. Most of the time the fighter will pick his mark, and like any good player will watch that guy like a hawk. And frankly its a welcome addition. Its not cheesy like aggro, but it allows a character to protect his friends, which is not really possible with the current rules.

I think bloodied could be somewhat unweildy with larger groups, but the benefits seem worth the cost.

I imagine bloodied could be done for large PC groups as has been mentioned with some sort of visual symbol. I am thinking of having a simple red card the players flip up on their character sheet when bloodied.

As for the monsters, I imagine that in large encounters you will be dealing with lots of low-level so they won't stay bloodied for long before being dead and more powerful monsters that could stay bloodied for a while be in of course smaller groups.

So we'll need to keep track of bloodied creatures, marked enemies with different marks from different characters, multiple conditions that grant Combat advantage, ongoing damage, and there are also the area buffs.

And counting distance as 1-2-1-2 slows down combat, LOL.

but...but... you can finally use all those cool pins, cards, and skull beads that you bought for 3e :)

Counting distance 1-2-1-2 slows down combat in a way that's not fun, though, that's the difference. I find the idea of fiddling with bloodied, marked, and combat advantage fun. Counting distance, not so much.

Only one mark can be on a creature at a time.

I think I have a feeling that there's fewer numeric things to keep track of, which will help conceptually.

Also, if things like ongoing damage occur on the turn of the character that inflicted it, that player is more likely to remember it when his turn comes up. Things like marked the instigating player will certainly keep track of, because his combat decisions will be based on it. Multiple conditions granting combat advantage? Better than those conditions granting separate and distinct bonuses and advantages to an attacker, much like the current edition.

And bloodied? I just love that the idea of bloodied has been introduced into the game.

Still think it's more complex? Well, now you have something to disprove the nay-sayers who claim 4E's been dumbed down ;)

I agree.
But it's more the kind of "miniature wargaming" fun than RPG fun, if you know what I mean.
They may make D&D a better and funnier game to handle miniature combat, but do they make D&D a better RPG?

What I really wonder is how all that will be handle outside combat.

wow, so if your a paladin, mark a critter, and step back into a ten foot hall behind two of your companion. Then watch as he kills himself, trying to get through them.

This is so silly, and combat is supposed to be easier now??
