Stacking allowed if two different power sources

How badly would DnD 3.x break if one allowed stacking of the same spell effect only if it was cast from two different sources (i.e., arcane and divine)? Thus, if a cleric's Bull Strength spell would stack with a wizard/sorcerer's Bull Strength spell, giving the recipient a +8 to Strength.

It might be interesting if you throw Psionics in the mix as well.

Any combination of 2 same name effects will not stack but when all three are on then the effect is multiplied by 1.5 or doubled.

I would call this ability something like the Resonance Factor or simply Resonance.

Well, soon you will see a fighter wearing Belt of Giant Strength +6 gets Bull's strength from fellow wizard and fellow cleric to get +14 enhancement bonus.

Also, you will open another can of worm to define which and which are from "different source". You are showing Arcane/Devinne as example, but spell-like abilities (except for invocation ), potions, wands, etc. are neither arcane nor divine.

Bad idea. When we first started playing 3e for some reason we thought mage armor stacked with regular armor and nothing could hit us of the appropriate level. We had to fight stuff that was 2 or 3 CR above our level. That was only mage armor stacking, no other spells.

I'm going to take the opposite approach. If he had to ask the question, then he obviously doesn't understand the interactions between various effects.

So I would tell him to go ahead and try it! If he doesn't sit down and think about the issues -- like he would have to do in a game -- he'll likely never understand the rationale behind the stacking rules.

Of course, I would never change the stacking rules. :)
