Stacking Animals

How does the Animal Domain special ability "cast Animal Friendship 1/day" stack with Druid Animal Companion?

Do you stack Druid/Cleric levels, or keep them separate (it should be irrelevant for the total HD, but not for the single companion max HD, isn't it?).

No stacking. Cleric levels are not Druid levels and vice-versa.

Yeah, they do stack.
Eg Clr5/Drd4 gets 9 HD of animal companions (double if not adventuring).

Of course, a Cleric/Druid is sort of silly. I've only seen one NPC who had a good reason to take it.

Note that a Druid with a Ring of Animal Friendship gets to stack that as well. That Ring is quite powerful in the hands of a druid.

Yup. It's when you try and get a pyramid entirely of dogs you run into trouble; like animals don't stack.

You could always stack square kittens. Yes, I know they don't exist, but they could with a Polymorph any Object spell

This will make druids upset, so beware of sudden weather changes and angry animals of the forest.

Ok, back to my question now...

I don't have PHB handy, so please forgive me. The key to answer my point is: what is the HD limit of Animal Friendship based upon?

If it's based on Character level, I think Cleric and Druid levels should stack (and should stack with other levels as well).

If it's based on Caster level, I think they shouldn't stack; anyway, you can have animal companions both from the Cleric casting and the Druid casting of AF, so you sum up total companions from both, but the HD limit for A SINGLE companion is kept separate.

So... which of the two?

It is a spell, so it should be based on caster level, IMHO.


And if I'm not totally wrong, the proper name is Bremer Stadtmusikanten.
