Stacking Wiz and Soc Levels

PoWer

First Post
If a 10th level Wizard took a Level in Sorcerer, would he then be a 11th caster in terms of spell durations and effects?

So if the spells he took at 1st level Soc were Magic Missle, would he throw 5 missles?

No. Refer to PHB, p.59 for details.

There's a feat (in CArc and maybe CDiv) that gives you +4 caster level in one class, but not above your HD, though.

Welcome to the boards, PoWer :).

As Darkness said, no by the Rules As Written (RAW - get used to this acronym, you'll see it often on this board). In addition to the Practised Spellcaster feat he mentioned, Unearthed Arcana also introduces a variant Magic Rating system so that caster levels from all spellcasting classes stack (and you even get caster levels from non-spellcasting classes).

It is my personal belief that the non-stacking of caster levels makes multi-classed spellcasters weaker than most other characters of their level, and that allowing caster levels to stack would partially address the problem. The fact that WotC has introduced the Practised Spellcaster feat and various "multiclass" PrCs (Arcane Trickster, Eldritch Knight, Mystic Theurge, etc.) seems to indicate some "official" recognition of this problem. However, some players and DMs are not comfortable with the idea of spellcaster level stacking, or do not believe that divine spellcaster levels should stack with arcane spellcaster levels, or that levels in classes that do not use magic should add to spellcaster level.

As a consolation, levels in Wizard and Sorcerer do stack to determine familiar abilities by the RAW.

wouldn't we all just love to get an extra 4 11 caster level magic missles or rays of enfeeblement every day? :D
Depends on what you're giving up to do so. In this case, the sample character will be giving up a 3rd-level spell and one or more 6th-level spells, also cast at 11th level.
