Those are damn cool!

Now, if only the maker would design some d4s as stained-glass lampshades (for tabletops or overhead)...

Hell, turn larger versions of those D20s into lamps? My guess is that you would have to bring a VERY large number of them -- or have them ridiculously priced -- not to sell out at Gencon.

What the heck* is quasi-crystalline sand?!? You can make glass out of sand, right? Is this just a poncy** term for "fancy glass"?

* If EN is here, his grandma must be, too.

A quasi-crystalline material can be said to be partway between a glass (amorphous, only very short-range order), and a crystal (transitional symmetry and long range order). Quasicrystals show longer-range order than glass, but they don't repeat that order over then entire substance.

I saw the prototype at Gen Con last year. It's quite beautiful. They were also not exactly quoting a fixed price, but it was implied that the d20 would cost around $300 apiece. Probably a fair price for an artist to make such. I imagine that d4 lampshades (tres cool idea) would possibly cost around the d20's cost to make just due to it requiring less labor.

I love it when a definition leaves me more confused then when I started... :P
