Stand alone City:::looking for interested contributers

Wiki?

I like this idea a lot, but coordinating so many people, with so many ideas, into such a large work is difficult. I've been brainstorming lately about creating a collaborative D&D wiki. Imagine something like Wikipedia, but for a D&D campaign setting. It would encompass cities, NPCs, new creatures, new spells, anything people integrate.

I'd be up for contributing to a setting wiki (something I've actually suggested here before).

[Edit: If the city were impossibly large and one person from the forums each devloped their own section of the city, it might produce very interesting results. Then we'd only have to hammer out some kind of mystical cosmolgy that lets different tech/levels themes co-exist side by side without intruding to much on one another.]

Well this might have me sounding like an old timer (which I'm not by Enworld standards) but in my time here at the best-darn-RPG-site-on-the-net collaborative city/world building projects have come up a lot. Everything from the City of En to Sharkworld, Aleasana, Piscean (a sci-fi setting), 'The City' and Cressia (which I'm using as my latest 'homebrew' setting) were all created here at Enworld.

If you do a search you might find them (I think Aleasana is still around). Anyway the process is fun and Enworlders all cool enough to create viable settings that don't get too weird (albeit that noone really got into my Bronto-World proposal).

The one thing I've never seen though is anyway carry the project on to producing a viable 'setting' product but as a group Wiki, it will be fun and lots of ideas will be generated so go and do it people! (and sign me up for some ideas)

*ponders some more*

Fair enough. If creative control isn't an issue, I'll likely contribute. It's a large imagination, I'm sure there's something in here I can lend and other things I can borrow.

In.

In fact, I think that I might start working on something like this in my free time. I plan on using only the 3.5 SRD as my source to ensure compatibility with other fantasy products.

Creative control is yours,

As far as the idea of whole pre written ideas is a good one though there might be an issue concerning meshing ideas into a collective whole.

As a group we should decide certain things and then flow with the writing as it goes only a few things might be said in critisim (sp?) for the benefit of the ultimate goal. As an example I put in a selection about a tavern " The Pit" that exists in Old Haven ( A hypothetical District for Elves) that is a bar ran by an orc, and someone else reminds me that its an elven district I might decide or be asked to change it to an elven or half elven establishment.

Tonguez, thank you
And you have a big point fruitition that is why I want to do it modularly. One full bit at a time with others "In the Works" A general outline of Urban Events (I.E. the Great Fire of 1234-) and a Map of Districts. The Districts are the Modules 1-##

I too experienced the lack of following up on a setting (Daemonforge) Which I was a small part of when it was going. Having a Setting Bible, and a good core following that knows their stuff is a key to success having people that are good at differing things is a key.

So say we have a guy who is good at Monsters, let him be about monsters, a guy that does cartography, or the hierarchy of the local district guardsmen, or thieves guild.

The Setting bible is the biggest thing we need to be able to hand someone a doc that gives them everything they need to know to write a section or item in regards to the region.

Tonguez's point should be well taken, making a full project that goes anywhere other than to our own creative lichyards is a good chance. It takes some dedication to the idea of it, and some want to.

A small gathering of productive fellows is better than a large amount of unproductive fellows

An Issue that we will face is Naming, and the Names of Things as a rule we should stick with a typical midevial european background, So english or semi english sounding names is my vote
(That does not mean that there are other districts with other names, as well as other races names for things.

My suggestion is to start on a District named for now DISTRICT ALPHA OR DISTRICT A, and that it is the District Surrounding the Palace or what serves thus, and it has access to either a river, or a bay the size of DISTRICT A should be roughly 890,000 + or - a thousand

I want something dark and gritty for this setting Kind of like Sin City Meets Sharn with healthy portions of Blade Runner, and Metropolis to boot. As for Races lets stick with OGL Standard for now with a few minor races thrown in for fun. I personally have a racial write up for a Sonic variation of a Kobold that is medium sized and a tough cookie.

Kobold Racial Traits
  • +2 Str, +4 Dex -2 Int, -2 Wis Kobolds are strong and agile but suffer from less wits and charm than other races.
  • Lowlight vision; Kobolds are able to see twice as far as humans in poor or little illumination, and darkvision 60ft.
  • Base speed 30 ft. Climb 15 Ft.
  • +2 Natural armor bonus; Kobolds have tough scaly skin.
  • Medium sized; as Medium sized creatures kobolds gain no bonuses because of size
  • +2 To Search, Spot, and Survival; Kobolds have better sight than others giving them advantages over others, and they are more used to taking care of themselves in dicy situations.
  • +4 racial bonus to listen checks; Kobolds hear on a broader spectrum than others
  • Chamleon Skin: Kobolds have a limited ability to change their skin color to fit the surroundings giving them a +4 to Hide checks
  • Sonic Burst; Kobolds are able to emit a burst of ultrasonic sound that gives them the ability to see in complete darkness (This includes magical darkness)
  • Light Sensativity; Kobold take a -1 Penalty to attack rolls in bright sunlight or within the radius of a daylight spell.
  • Draconic traits; Kobolds are dimly related to dragons and as such are able to use dragon specific items.
  • Immunities: Kobolds are immune to sleep spells and effects, and paralysis.
  • Automatic Languages: Kobold, Common
  • Bonus Languages; Dwarven, Orc, Goblin, Elven, and Undercommon.
  • Favored Class: Fighter
  • LA +2

I started a little while ago on a city called seybiel, it wandered the plains, so could show up any where, it also had four planes it was tied to, a magic one, a plaisn one, adn a ferw other.

I would be up to contributing, though I think the wiki idea would be best.

Let someone moderate...kinda, and post problems here.

I won't be able to go full time,. but I would glady contribute what I could.
