Stand Alone Encounters

Here's another I've put up onto the 4E boards. I'm working on doing thsi into a PDF.... I just need to learn how....

I'll see what I can do to get a Word/PDF up. Mine are just hand written. I'll throw another up to keep the thread rolling.

Trigger - PC's purchase more than one hundred gold worth of goods from a single shop.

Event - As the PC's are making their way back towards the Inn (or whatever) their normal road is blocked by a pair of ox carts as the drivers argue and fight over who needs to move. As the PC's make their way around (by alley or side street) they are surrounded by twelve men.

Perception vs 20; Clubs. Sacks. Cheap Armor. Thugs.
Perception vs 25; One of them is wearing a ring, that has no place on a common man. If the PC can make a History vs 20 check also, they recognize it as the insignia ring of a local lord that went missing.

The thugs will demand payment for the PC's crossing their 'land'. 2 Gold per PC. They will be rough in speech and manners, though pretending to have an air of dignity and prestige. If a PC can Bluff them, then one will spill the name - Red Alley Cutters. A wanted band of thieves and killers well known in the city. The encounter can play out a number of ways...

-If the PC's fight, then the Cutters will run away, calling for the local constable to come and arrest them. The PC's drew steel on them!

-If the PC's use diplomacy, they might be able to get away without paying a penny. Or they could anger the thugs into throwing the first punch. Then the PC's can call the local police.

-If the PC's decide disgression is the better part of valor, and pay. Then the thugs will hunt them down every day afterwards. Charging the same fee.

Optional A- The Ring is one of Lordship. There's a family on the outskirts of the city that would pay very very well to have it returned to them.

Optional B- Oops. The thug with the ring WAS the missing Lord, just playing his hand at thugging. If the PC's kill him, they immediately become wanted men and women.

Optional C- As the PC's recover the ring they are, in turn, discovered by the police. Who promptly arrest them, and the PC's will need to RP through a court case to defend themselves from being accused of the missing noble's murder.
