I didn’t want to watch “Rules of Engagement” (more Klingon stuff, courtroom drama), but I’m determined not to skip any episodes. I watched it sped up. It turned out to be OK.

“Hard Times” was a hard watch. Talk about Miles suffering. Whew!

Trek has hard core fans. The filler and mediocre episodes can be absolute meh though to terrible.

Theres smoother sci fi even more or less contemporary with DS9.

And DS9 is one of the "smoother" Treks.

I didnt think TNG was that good watched recently. The peaks are great, 3 characters hog the screen and I dont really like any of them that much. 80% of the show was filler to outright crap.

DS9 has the way better characters and more even spread of screen time.

What some people call "filler", I call "character episodes" or "worldbuilding". While they may not have the impact of something like Way of the Warrior or The Maquis, episodes like The House of Quark or Rejoined let us get to know the characters, so we care about them when the big things go down. For example, looking at the episode pukunui is up to now, there's about to be a major revelation about someone, and that wouldn't be anywhere near as impactful if we hadn't seen the relevant character already in several episodes. Same thing with the Mirror Universe episodes – a big part of the fun is seeing how the mirror universe counterparts of the characters we've come to know look and behave, and if we don't have something to compare them we don't care.

That said, the quality of some of these episodes is sometimes... lacking. But that's a separate thing from calling them "filler".

I dont mind filler but there's a big difference between good filler vs bad filler.

TNG has way more bad filler episodes than DS9 IMHO.

Some trekkies have watch lists. They're essentially cherry picking the good stuff. Its interesting to see how much they cut as is varies by person.
