Spoilers Star Wars: Andor season 2

But yes, the old EU did at least give the New Republic more breathing room (like a whole century!) and let Han, Luke, and Leia enjoy their success for the most part.
That's not the EU I remember. Han's and Leia's marriage is stressed with her grappling with politics and him running about the universe. Their family life is a shambles with one kid going dark side (becoming an influence for the story of Ben Solo/Kylo Ren) and one (the one named after his mother's torturer for some dumb reason) is dead. Chewie's dead. Luke's wife is murdered by his nephew and Luke himself is exiled until he can figure out why Jacen turned into such a putz. None of that sounds like enjoying their success for the most part.

OK. I'd forgotten those details since I'm only familiar with what I've read about the EU - mainly via the SWSE sourcebooks and wookieepedia. That doesn't sound much better ... although at least readers got to experience the OT heroes grappling with those things instead of having a big time jump where it all happened off screen?

Yeah it mostly played out over 40 years in their timeliness and 20+ IRL.

The bad stuff got dumped on and forgotten quickly. NJO suffered from when it was released and was to bloated imho.

Empire vs New Republic was mostly played out by 1998 imho. Large scale anyway.

Books never really recovered after that imho at least the Skywalker family ones. The good stuff was comics , Sith stuff and different timeliness eh Old Republic, Legacy etc.

90s was all over the place uality and thematic wise. Post NJO they tightened up on that so it was more coherent.

Most of it was typical EU, some outright stinkers and sone great stuff. Novels peaked 90s, creativity wise probably 2002- 2012 ymmv of course.

Skywalker mostly played out by early 2000 imho.

I liked the old EU.

At the beginning it felt mostly like "Sith of the week". Some stories were good, some stories were bad, but none of them struck me as memorable.

The Thrawn trilogy felt like the first time they were telling a story that has lasting consequences.

Same with the NJO. I liked the Vong: finally a new enemy that was able to significantly challenge Jedis without being Sith or some variation of Dark Force users. I agree that it could have been trimmed down some, but at the same time I remember that when I read them the ending felt a bit rushed. The Vong went from being an unstoppable force to completely outmatched in 1-2 books.
My understanding is that it also suffered from Lucas meddling into it.

I didn't follow much what was published after the NJO. What few things I picked up felt like a rehash of previous stuff, especially Jacen arc.

Big arcs were swarm war. Legacy books and fate of the Jedi.

When the legacy books were the highlight you're in trouble.

Cool concepts in all 3 but yeah.
