Star Wars d20 is dead

Anyways, long story short, I think Star Wars was doomed from the start (the Wizards version I mean) because they didn't follow the WEG model, they instead tied it to the fate of the movies too much. And hey, who knows - maybe their contract with LucasArts is going to be up soon and they don't want to be caught in the middle of producing a book when it does end.

my .02 cents
Nah. It was doomed the way Deborah Norville took over Jane Pauley on NBC Today. Many d6 gamers didn't welcome the new game under the new rules system, though a few have crossed over.

Some have argued that the price of the RPG/minis/TCG combo license (in the form of royalty payment) is too expensive, compared to WEG's license. So when they started selling minis, they find them cheaper to produce and more profitable to sell.

It's not the expense of the license, it's the terms of the license which specify that Wizards produce a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 products per year (for whatever definition of "products" applies... I suspect it's different for minis, where perhaps an entire expansion set counts as a single product). Since the RPG and minis fall under the same license agreement, it makes more sense for Wizards to focus on producing minis products now when the line is a big seller and much more profitable than the RPG, and then come back to the RPG a couple of years down the road when minis sales cool off and there's more demand for RPG stuff.

This isn't original thought on my part, btw; it comes from here.

I love how misinformation and speculation are distributed as fact on the internet. While I do know what's up with the RPG and can't say a single thing about it, I can say that most of the "facts" I've seen in this thread, in terms of the license and the popularity of d6 vs. d20, are either wildly inaccurate or outright false.

Anyway, go back to talking among yourselves.

Has anyone reminded you recently that you are still thoroughly and irrevocably evil? :)

I know you're not working directly with them anymore, but If you ever get a chance to pass on to the WotC higher-ups that the fans are chewing their fingers to the quick and ranting insanely over the fate of a beloved game thanks to the total info silence, I'd appreciate it. ;)

I secound that. :) :D

Also pass on the plastic miniatures really don't take the place of new books in the hearts of many fans.

Oglethorpe: Impossible! The Star Wars RPG can only be killed by stabbing him in the heart with the ancient bone saber of Zumakalis.
Emory: Or probably his head and lungs, too. Just stab him wherever, really.
Oglethorpe: And the saber probably doesn't have to be bone.
Emory: Yeah, really. Just anything sharp just lyin' around the house.
Oglethorpe: You could poke him with a pillow and kill him.

Darrin, I know you can't really say anything definitive. However, would be be totally against any NDA's or whatever to say whether or not it's worth worrying about the RPG line. Just any statement like "don't give up hope" or "look to the horizon" or "wait for Gen Con" would suffice. Even if it's "I wouldn't hold my breath" I would be happy. At least we'd have a vague idea rather than everyone arguing one way or another or bringing up "offical" statements that honestly aren't.

Thanks,
Kane

It seems that Star Wars d20 is now offically dead.

This would utterly suck. :(

So, will current players stop playing?

No way! I'm too much of a fan to give up because there isn't anything "fashionable" coming out. :)

past more worldbooks on places NOT in the various movies, there's not a lot else to expect from the line, is there?

Well yes there is! What about an updated, "Ultimate Starships of the Galaxy"?
What about a "Revenge of the Sith" sourcebook?

More importantly, what about adventures, actual campaigns ready to play?

If Wizards wants to stop the line, fine, but at least make it possible for other fans to publish materials for it! I know... there is LucasArts behind... all the IP/copyright issue. But what if they would accept with special sanctions/licences from Wizards? That would be great. There doesn't seem to be any chance for this happening, but I can keep on dreaming, right? *sigh*
