Star Wars games in the wake of RotS

Well, just saw the movie a few hours ago, and I'm gobbling up all the Internet discussion I can find here, at rpg.net and otherwise about the movie.

And really feeling an urge to get some Star Wars gaming mojo on. Anyone wanna spill their ideas for Star Wars games? If you were to run one (whether you will or not), what kind of game would you set up and run?

If you were to run one (whether you will or not), what kind of game would you set up and run?

I was inspired by the movie but I've been jonesing to get a d6 SW game going for a while. I'll probably try to run a game at the next Boston Game Day.

Yeah, my SW of choice is the d6 version. I like the d20 version but d6 is just an awesome system.

As far as the timeline goes, I would probably run it around the time of Empire Strikes Back. From a background standpoint, that's probably what most players know the best. It's also easy for a GM to come up with scenarios since there is opposition everywhere.

For a campaign though, I would probably run it post-Jedi.

A long time ago in a galaxy far,
far away...

A vast sea of stars serves as the backdrop for the main title. War drums echo through the heavens as a roll-up slowly crawls into infinity.

STAR WARS

Episode I: The Siege of Naldar

It is a time of CIVIL WAR. Imperial
forces, using a new and terrible
weapon known as the DEATH STAR, have
laid waste to the peaceful planet
of Alderaan. Imperial forces across
the galaxy lay siege to those few
planets brave enough - and foolish
enough - to stand up against the
might of EMPEROR PALPATINE.

The industrial paradise of NALDAR
is one of those few stalwart
defenders of the Old Republic. All
that stands between it and the might
of the EVIL GALACTIC EMPIRE are its
PLANETARY SCREENS.

But the Empire has already hatched
a nefarious scheme to bring the
proud defenders of Naldar to their
knees...

EXT. OUTER SPACE

The camera pans across space, revealing a silvery moon, its surface scarred by asteroids and recent conflict. A massive IMPERIAL STAR DESTROYER fills the screen. Small pods fire off its surface and hurtle to the planet below.

CUT TO:

EXT. NALDAR - ATMOSPHERE

A handful of four-man pods fall towards the planet, leaving trails of fire.

CUT TO:

INT. NALDAR - SEEDY MOTEL ROOM

We do a close-up on LITA MOREN, a young, captivating woman with a spark of passion in her eyes that hides her loneliness. She watches shooting stars fall in the distance as a barrage of turbolaser fire LANCES up at the intruders. The camera catches the interplay of fire in the deep, purple-red pools of Lita's eyes. Behind her, we can make out three indistinct people.

Suddenly, the camera focuses on the motel door as it BURSTS open and four well-armed GOONS, led by the cyborg gunslinger QUICK NINES, rush in with blasters drawn.

ROLL FOR INITIATIVE…

I'm playing in two hours. The game is a typical MacGuffin "find the data disc" set-up, but I'm using it mostly to introduce the characters and some NPCs. I have no idea where the game is going to go; my players and I have come up with a boatload of NPCs and I've given some of them large, evil plots, but I don't know how much we'll get into. One of the PCs is looking for the homeworld of humanity, so that should be a major theme.

edit: That is how the game is going to start off.

I WANT to run one more...but really, my current players would kill me...and I'm not sure I could pull off YET ANOTHER at this point.

Currently...I'm running:

Tales of the Jedi Era all Jedi campaign with the characters doing their best to mop of the leftovers of the Sith Wars.

Rebellion Era, Rebel Alliance game...PCs area trying to recover the B-Wing prototype starfighter that was stolen.

Rebellion Era, Imperial game...PCs are also trying to recover the same B-Wing before the Rebels get to it. The thing crashed down and its a race to see which group tracks it down first. At the moment, the Imperials are the ones on planet and closest.

Rebellion Era, Rogue Squadron game...ignoring continuity, and set post-ANH. Yes, 12 PCs. Its insane, and so far, I'm loving running it even if its really a crazy thing to do. They're trying to find a new Rebel base now that Yavin is gone. :)

Post-Sith, Pre-ANH single PC game. Former Jedi Padawan gone bounty hunter that survived the purge...a fun game, though its slowed down recently due to my own fault. Gots to get that moving again.

Rebellion Era Infinities game. The PCs are taking on the roles of the original cast(Han, Luke, Leia, etc) and playing out the events of the OT as they would have done things...with a few minor changes being thrown in to shake things up. This has JUST started, so its the one taxing my resources the most.

...I think that's it...wait, no, I'm playing in one post-Jedi game. :)

THAT'S it. So, no, I really can't do another.

Potential Spoiler Plot Hook - Beware!!!

Saw it this morning!

My scenario idea is "order 66". The Players are Jedi and thier companions, in charge of large forces of Clones. The GM should go into great detail about how much ordinance the Clone Troopers have brought along.

Then the GM should let the Players see him set a digital timer and set it behind his screens.

The Jedi go on the mission a bit...distracted. :)

Me too!

If you ran it, not only would I play it, but I would supply either (a) all the 4" Star Wars figures we need (my preference, as they're the most fun to customize) or (b) Action-Fleet scale figures.

Of course I could always invoke option (c)... but I would prefer not to...

I am Option C

And I offer the use of a ton of Star Wars pre-painted plastic minis.

But we all know what happens when you invoke me...

I love the Star Wars genre and I think the d20 revised system looks pretty clean. IMO trying to run campaigns that mirror a movie don't pan out very well. Most movies (Star Wars included) have huge plot holes in them that a thinking PC will drive an X-wing through. Plus, I just wouldn't want to try to alter the existing epic. Just me.

I would play out scenarios on the side lines to the movies--probably different Rebellion missions designed around the movies. Like get a shipment of necessary stardrives to the Rebellion staging area prior to the Death Star attack. Alderran rescue missions. The unknown Jedi (besides Obi-Wan) that fled and found exile somewhere.

Or I would place all the action after the movies and create new Sith threats--perhaps even a return of the Sith race. The whole "there's always 2" is bit too limited.

I'm jonesing for some StarWars gaming, too.

I think if I were to run SWd20, I'd set my campaign before all the movies. That era is pretty much a blank slate. The pre-Empire, Empire, and post-Empire eras have been greatly explored in movies, novels, games, comics, cartoons, etc. An Old Republic campaign set about 30 years or so before even AotC could gerner some good StarWarsy action without having to worry about how the major events in the galaxy would interfere with my campaign. A few familiar faces would be around (Yoda, Palpatine, Mace Windu, Qui-Gon, and even Ben Kenobi as a child), so I could still name drop in certain parts of the galaxy if I wanted to.

Yes, yes you do... With all the source material exposed now it will be better than ever. :D

I would love to game in that 17 year period between RotS and ANH but without a source book from WotC it will be far harder to pull off.
