Star Wars: Religion?

1. The screenplay calls it a Massassi temple, though this doesn't imply religion in the present.

Yep. Not only that, but the stone heads that the Gungans meet Padme near in TPM are refered to as a ruined temple as well. SW seems to be crawling with religious references. I never actually checked before.

Actually, if I remember correctly, the Massassi were followers/disciples of either the Sith or a single Sith Lord, possibly Exar Kun - if that rings anyone's bell. Man, it has been far too long since I've delved into the realm of Star Wars - sorry that my memory has faded.

I also want to say that there was some sort of religion touched upon in the book Splinter of the Mind's Eye - though I'd have to find and read it again to remember what, who, and why.

Didn't the Selonians (for the Corellian Sector) have some form of religion as well? Or is it merely the Argophobia (fear of open spaces) that I'm confusing it with?

Finally, though not certain (my memory really is going!), I thought that the tiny bird-like aliens from the Tapanii Sector had some sort of religion - and of course, I really can't remember what that alien species was called.

Heh. Guess I wasn't any help at all.

The Massassi were created by Naga Sadow, and eventually taken under the control of Exar Kun much later. The temples were Sith Temples(though the true Sith were gone by this point), so even if it is a religion, it ends up going back to The Force in one form or another.

The Mrlssi? They weren't religious as I remember them, but focused strongly on education and knowledge.

As for religion in Star Wars, its honstly not IMPORTANT to the overall story(non-EU at least), so its not there. We have references within the screenplays that at least validate that there is religion, but it does nothing for the plot. Even the Jedi aren't really treated as a religion as much as enlightened warriors.

...which is the problem with the Jedi in the Rise of the Empire Era. ;)

Either the temples are temples, or Lucas is making a subtle jab at archaeology. There's a distressing tendency* for archaeologists to take any building that they can't figure out the function for and refer to it as a ritual space. :)

"Bunch of pyramids with big spaces in them so we can put fighters in them? Temples. What else could they be?"

Brad

(* - The tendency is realized, and I understand there're efforts to counter it, which is good.)
