Starcraft RPG: Who would be interested?

Would you throw down you hard earned money on a Starcraft RPG?

  • Nope... I can do it with d20 Future, Gurps, or any other generic system.

I was gonna say yes, but once I read the second I agree that it would be better to do it with an already existing system.
It's still a starcraft RPG even if the system is not called 'starcraft RPG'.

(Dark Templar PCs? Good luck balancing them!) and is a woefully underdeveloped universe on top of that.

1) Why couldn't the Dark Templar be a PRC and a hard to qualify for one on top of that?
2) Personally I see the fact that it is underdeveloped as a strength, not a weakness. It allows the GM to do whatever they want with it.

Indubitably.

And anyway, I've been tinkering with D20 Modern/Future material for a StarCraft campaign for a while now, just haven't gotten much fully completed yet except for most of the Zerg ground units.

The history of the Dark Templar, for one. It's not something you train for unless you're a Khalai like Tassadar (who himself couldn't cloak as he never got to complete that training and he's one of a kind). While maybe it takes training, I find it hard to believe that the majority of the Dark Templar population couldn't qualify for it, and I see no reason why most Dark Templar would be heroes rather than Ordinaries.

I would agree if it were, say, medieval fantasy, rather than taking part in a time period we literally know nothing about. This is especially an issue with the Protoss.

So ME.....

Although i would like to see how they adapt the rules from Ghost rather than the strategy game itself

In some ways that is worse. In StarCraft: Ghost a Ghost could pump their speed up to four times normal and throw irradiation grenades. Also (according to the novels) their suits are strong enough to rip off steel doors, and that's weaker than a Marine suit.

I'm a HUGE StarCraft fan, but still I'd have to say no.

Future RPG settings are really hard to design. StarCraft isn't Firefly; it's far removed from real-life, which creates problems when it comes to players ... solving problems. It also creates a large number of balance problems (Dark Templar PCs? Good luck balancing them!) and is a woefully underdeveloped universe on top of that. At least it isn't Star Trek; between a zillion alien races, overpowered phasers and transporters that would nearly be unplayable. :o

Maybe if there were several more well-written novels, they stopped making powered armor so uber, found a way of keeping PCs out of vehicles like Wraiths and Goliaths, made Ghosts "playable" or banned them and ensured that Protoss were NPC-only I'd be interested, but I doubt the designers would try to keep the vehicle, Ghost and Protoss fans out of the game.

So... you want to take out half of what makes Starcraft fun, and publish it?

I think that would reduce the already-small customer base. I don't think it's really possible to do right. It wasn't designed as an RPG. It's only a lucky break (like Firefly) where a sci-fi setting that isn't designed as an RPG can be adapted.

Eh. If RIFTS can succeed, anything can.

I voted "hell yeah", but only if was D20 and built off of Modern/Future. Not that it can't be done with what's out there, but an official treatment would be great. If they wanted to make it OGL like Warcraft that would be fine as well. Warcraft isn't that far removed from standard D&D.
