Stargate Universe #4:Darkness/Season 1/2009

I thought they weren't planning on having a major alien antagonist like the Goa'uld, Wraith, or Ori? I seem to recall reading somewhere that they were trying to avoid that particular setup. Am I remembering wrong?

That's possible but can a show really work without antagonists?
We do know that Rhona Mitra is going to be playing an Alien Leader in Episode 18-20. The rumored leader of an Lucian Alliance. If that's true I really want to see how well they write them into the story without it being retarded.

They've said that there won't be a major baddie, at least not this season. There will be minor threats, some recurring, but if there's ever gonna be a Big Bad, it's gonna be something that will evolve into that status over time.

According to spoilers, there gonna be a storyline concerning
The Lucian Alliance having a spy onboard/inside SGC and trying to claim the Destiny for themselves
, but it won't start until midway through the season.

You don't need aliens or any other conveniently obvious baddies to have antagonists. There are antagonistic relationships and people working at cross purposes and I frankly find that more interesting than monolithic threats. Why muddy the waters with too much clarity?

Yeah, I'm really enjoying the slow buildup and character development. Right now the antagonist is the crappy condition of the ship and their lack of knowledge about it. Doesn't lead to a lot of action, but I'm ok with that too. For me, I would much rather watch a "slow" episode that has lots of great character moments and great writing than an episode that is all guns blazing and not much else. I know they can find a good balance, but it's gonna take them (the actors and the writers) a while to get used to the new show. I would much rather see them go through that breaking in period with character pieces than just action.

I think part of the reason this episode was a little slower was because this episode and the next were originally one story that ran too long for cutting and got split up into two episodes.

I didn't particularly mind the episode; it was a nice change of pace from the last episode's hurried urgency. I liked the withdrawal semi-aside, and I'm hoping the confessionals were a way of introducing more characters that will be used. Also, it was a nice touch that the crew didn't bother grabbing Rush, but kidnapped Eli to get information. The whole theme of this episode was basically Eli's self-deprecation; I'd bet he'll be the one to figure out how to escape the sun next episode.

On the downside, Chloe is useless. The scene with Eli and the other guy (Tyler, I thinkRiley, he had a confessional) was completely out of left field; it didn't fit at all. The storylines with Young and the woman, and the colonel trying to get him fired, were fairly boring.

I have to say the Lou Diamond Philips character is already starting to annoy me. The way he's trying to micro-manage what is being done is horrible. I mean it isn't like they can replace Young.

What is surprising to me, is they are not using the stones to put fixers on the ship! If you are going to switch bodies, switch them with people like Carter or McKay, who have have lots of tech knowledge to help out.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Seems like bad planning to only have a angry guy that is willing to cause permanant damage to the body he is in be the guy going.
