Stargate Universe #5:Light/Season 1/2009

Eli is a flawed character, like every other character on the show.

I really like this aspect of the show. Eli is a self-conscious geek. Chloe feels useless. TJ wasn't even supposed to be there anymore, and she feels out of her depth without a doctor. Rush is alienated from the rest of the team and doesn't get the respect he thinks he deserves. Camile feels completely out of control for probably the first time in a long while. Greer has anger-management issues. Scott has to man-up a lot faster than expected.

The "leader," Young, feels overwhelmed, is physically crippled, and is still mourning the destruction of his marriage.

These guys act like the supporting casts of the first two Stargate shows. Yet none of them is completely unsympathetic. I found I could empathize with everybody, even Greer, who struck me at first as a bully. I also like that there have been small roles for many of the secondary characters even in just the first few episodes -- and unlike a lot of "wagon train to the stars" shows, the secondary characters are going to be very noticeable if they disappear all of a sudden back to central casting.

Exactly! It's not the Stargate I'm used to, but I'm really digging the show so far!

What Dire Bear said about Eli...
I mean, it hurt to watch him with Chloe, basically letting her use him for comfort, but I could totally see it happening. Which, I guess, is why it made me feel something.
I agree that the writing/directing/acting on this show have been phenomenal so far and I can't wait to see more.

I think the Ancients were a bunch of show offs, at least before they all ascended, got boring, and did nothing. Why build spaceships, when you can have big cities that can travel in hyperspace between galaxies? Why have a ship that just has rechargable solar batteries when you can have the damn thing fly right into the sun and scoop up all that raw fusion power? ;)

  • Breaking Eli's heart in a love triangle? Figure Eli will start teaching her stuff, we know she is sharp and smart but she ends up with the football player, our young pilot.

Yeah watch out Eli, she's the type that'll break your heart. Either that or the producers are taking lessons from the TNT Book of Good Sci-Fi Writing.

I think I know at least part of what put a bug up Rush's ass. Back in the first episode, right before the base gets attacked, he goes back to his room alone and starts moping over a picture of him and some woman. I think he was married, and she either died or divorced him, and he hasn't gotten over it. He seems to be kind of bipolar, and he's acting very obsessed over everything here with Destiny. I think he has kind of a death wish, and that's why he pulled his name out. Doesn't seem like a good combination. I don't think he knew the ship would recharge, but Young's comments are the sort of thing that'll just fuel more rage. Mabe Young meant it partially in jest, as a way of lightening things up, but Rush probably took it as an accusation.
