Starship Combat - best rules you have seen

I personally think BNS has its faults (like everything) but is a good setting-less toolkit providing a lot of the rules people need at a lower price than some of the other alternatives (T20, Star Wars).

If Turanil (or anyone else) has a suggestion for making Blood and Space better I would be happy to hear them.

I don't have rules for sectional damage for larger ships, but I created a space combat system based on d20 &d6 Starwars, but including 3d combat as the basis for the system. You can find it for free at my website Carai an Aman The few people that have given me their oppinions on it have said that they like it. I'll work out some simplistic rules for sectional damage and update it within a couple days. Check it out. If you don't like it more than the other suggestions, you loose nothing, 'cause it's free.

Id like to point out that BNS has rules for sectional damage as well, page 93-94 of the print version.

If you read the reviews here at ENWorld you will see a range of opinion on the book, mostly good.

If a 2nd edition of Blood & Space is on the work, and readers suggestions sought, I would be glad to read it carefully and give my detailed feedback on it.

Right now, the few things that I remember off the top of my head, are: The Trailing feat: there is no difference between the Trailing feat, and the trailing maneuver description. Well, I suppose that like other piloting feats, those who don't have it take a -4 to their check in attempting it. Likewise the Healing Frenzy feat is unclear; something is missing to understand what it brings to have this feat compared to someone who doesn't have it. I would also point Explosives Expert: this feat enables to create explosives with a Demolition check; maybe I don't understand things, but Demolition is about manipulating explosive not crafting them, and why not just use Craft Chemical to make explosives as indicated on the table ? Otherwise, I would be glad to review the character classes, which IMO could get some improvement, and better background descriptions.

In any case, I said that I find Blood & Space mediocre (mainly because of such details), but I don't regret having bought it. I would say I regret more having bought Dragonstar, despite that one has much better layout and art, and less editing problems.

The rules for starship combat in the Starfarer's Handbook by FFG are quite precise and while the tend to bug down the game a bit they are not over-the-top complex. If you are interested in really quick-and-dirty rules they are definitely not for you but if you want fairly precise depictions of actual space combat without drowning in calculations and dice rolls they should be worth your time.
