I'll agree with starting with the SCAG. The 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Sourcebook is probably the best most recent in-depth world guide (though I do love the original grey box).
Once you have an idea of what region you want to play in, I'd check the 2e releases for an applicable sourcebook.The Volo's Guides are fun and pretty inspiring in particular.
