starting a new game

I am starting a new campaign. as per the request of a few players its going to be based on the warhammer 40k world. I also have at least 3 totally new players to my game starting, none are new gamers just new to my game.

So since i know a ton of game systems and this setting can go just about any way i was considering having everyone in the first session have sort of a Q&A about what game rules they want to use and what they enjoy in a gaming session. After years of gaming i find my best sessions are ones where the players RP well and have fun, so i want them all to be able to voice thier say and hopefully weave them all together into something that everyone will enjoy.

Has anyone else ever tried this direct approach and if so what happened and what advice do you have?

We've tried this several times, the most recently with a horror/Cthulhu campaign. It works, but remember that you are the one running it and therefore have the final say on the system to be used. Sometimes a player will simply like a single game mechanic from system 'x' and you can incorperate that into another system that everyone else want to play.

Yeah i see there being some conflict between two of the gamers i know well. One loves classless whitewolf style systems and the other thinks that sci-fi games are too lethal without tons of HP so will want to go D20. I am not sure whether to let the group vote on that or give them both a pair of boxing gloves to settle it lol.

Although I always try to get a consensus from the players about what to play, in my groups, I have found that there will always be at least 1 person who will be unhappy with the choice.
And rather than let the players duke it out ... if there is disagreement, I always make the final decision. That way the players don't feel that one of them got his own way at the expense of another . It was the GM's final call so if anyone has a problem with it they can take it up with me.
