Starting Characters above 1st Level. HELP!

MorganGray

First Post
So I have decided to start my newest campaign with the characters at 9th level. I'm a little stumped about how I should handle starting equipment (spells). Basically, what is the best method to "age" a character?

Also, if anyone has any cool encounter tips for El5-9 encounters I'd love to hear them :)

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom :)

By starting equipment (spells), I assume you mean spells known for a Wizard. My own method is to give them the two free spells per level, plus the starting 3 + Int modifier. Anything else comes out of their starting equipment cost as a scroll + the scribing cost.

Thanks man. Anyone have any tips on items and gear in general? I want to start them with good gear for the level, but I'm worried that I might make them "too" powerful.

As far gear is concerned, you basically have three options:

1. Let them choose all of their gear. This will produce more powerful PCs than average for their level, because they don't have to deal with the vagaries of actually campaigning to get custom gear.

2. Choose all of their gear for them. Unless you're also creating pregenerated characters for the group, this is a bad idea, and isn't much fun for anyone concerned.

3. Let them choose a certain amount of their gear, and assign the rest. This can work fairly well, but it's also pretty easy to screw it up.

Personally, I'd go with option 1. The players will have a blast (if they're anything like me or my group, they'll spend hours and hours picking just the right items), and I don't find that level of customization to be terribly unbalancing. Particularly if you don't fudge die rolls during combat, having a little extra padding between the party and random deaths is a good thing, IMO.

Edit: of course, you still retain veto power over problematic items and combinations of items. If you do go with option 1 and you want to avoid uber-focused specialized characters, make it clear from the outset what your general restrictions are on item choices. Some PrCs and character concepts can become truly gross in their area of expertise with the right combination of items (generally, a combination that wouldn't be acheived in actual play). Avoid this, and you should be golden -- and depending on your players, you may not need to do anything to avoid this (if they're not approaching things from a powergaming perspective, etc.)

One of my players mentioned a method he uses. Using the rules for wealth by character level in the DMG, he lets his players buy what ever they want for gear so long as no one item is worth more than half of his gp total. For 9th level this means no item worth more than 18000gp. Powerful items but not earthshaking. max weapon level is +3 with this rule.

Just a thought

That's how the PHB does wizards already. 3+Int mod at 1st level and 2 every level there after.

I myself would give them 3 a level.

Personally, I let them buy what they want with a fraction of the DMG's recommended starting money -- from half to two-thirds. Then I give the party as a whole a list of randomly chosen magic items. They get to divide the magic loot up as they wish.

Thanks,

I think I will go with with 3/4ths of gold by level, and use the "no one item can be more than half of the starting gold rule".

I'm sure my players will have a ball going through the DMG. It's like a crazy shopping spree :)

It's not a coincidence that Robin Laws described roleplaying as "fantasy shopping for guys".

I've just finished work on a quick equipment generation system for high level characters. It's sort of a choose one from column a, one from column b kind of thing, and it doesn't have limited use items (wands, potions, scrolls), but it's handy for quickly generating equipment lists, especially for NPCs.

Email me if you want it and I'll send you a copy. It's only a three page word file.
