Statting Jarlaxle?

A friend and I were attempting to stat up Jarlaxle (the reocurring drow merecenary leader from RA Salvetore's various books) and, though we spent nearly an hour trying to do so, the only thing we could agree on was a race. Has anybody done so already? And if not, what do you guys think it would be?

My guess:

He would be a high level fighter/rogue, with either a few levels of wizard/sorcerer or a very high UMD skill.

I haven't read an RAS book in ages, but as I recall wouldn't plain old Drow Fighter be a good start? Granted, I haven't read any books with Jarlaxle in them since the first Underdark trilogy (whatever that was called) but he seemed to just be a very skilled and clever fighter.

So, fighter with a high dex and intelligence, above average charisma...level in the mid teens?

BTW, I love these threads. Especially when they turn in a to "would Superman beat Batman in a fight" argument. ;)

He would definitely have some rogue levels. He could move silently, hide in shadows. I seem to recall that he preferred to sneak attack/ambush people over a straight up stand-up fight. He could also use wands and such, which is why I said high UMD skill or a few levels of wizard.

Actually, I don't have the book in front of me, but I think he was done in the Menzo boxed set. I think he was a 18 fighter, nothing else. Remember, in 2E they made exceptions to fit the description, so he might have had some ability to move silently and hide. Further, wands and other items could be used by anyone then, as long as they used the command word.

I don't know that there is any good way to do him in 3.X, mainly because he is a good fighter. Any multi classing will take from his BAB and he is supposed to be good. However, only one level in rogue won't give him the points needed for UMD.

I can check and see if I am correct about the write up when I get to my books.

Have a good one! Take care!

I know he uses the swashbuckling fighting style, using two short swords. Thats at least the style he used on the surface. In the underdark he seemed to focus mostly on throwing daggers of some type (drow long knives?) with what was most likely the teleporting attribute from the Expanded Psionics handbook. I'd put him as a swashbuckler. That would seem to cover his good fighting skills, his rougish combat style and his versitality. My friend put him at a rogue/fighter.

"Underdark" lists him as a simple Ftr 18.

I don't recall him ever being an especially good fighter, not for his level anyway, but he is a master of intrigue, so he should certainly have skills to reflect that.

This would suggest that stragiht fighter won't go:
Rogue
Bard
or Marshal levels might need to be considered to give a workable total of skill points.

I say Marshal, because he is a leader, though drow leadership is more of the "we do not tolerate failure in this organisation" than the inspiring type.

Skills he needs:

Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate, Sense Motive - maxed

Stealth, like combat, is something he is good at, but not spectacular for his level - he has disposable underlings for that.

Or, if you really want the BAB:
Rgr 9/ Ftr 9

Buy the needed skills cross-class and take Drow as his most favoured enemy to fill the gaps.

Stats:
Outrageous INT
Decent CHA
Rest good

Here's my version of him. Though, it isn't final, because as new books come out with new feats, PrC, and other material then I end up re-vamping him anyway. But here is my version of Jarlaxle so far that I've used in my games. This was made almost a year ago, and with stuff like the Player's Handbook 2 and alternate class features recently released, I believe I'll have to remake him again.
