Stealth/Sneak Attack "Rogue" Build Advice

I played a Rogue/wizard till level 15 and used to basically use relatively low level spells to routinely kill the boss monster.

I had the practised spellcaster feat, to increase my caster level by +4, I used low level touch spells (like shocking grasp) and the feat for casters that allows them to use touch spells in sneak attacks (I can't remember the name of the feat now, as it has been a while), so by about 10-11 level I was going invisible, sneaking up on monsters and then hitting them with a 11d6 attack (5d6 lightning, 5d6 sneak attack and by that stage I had a rapier with lesser spell storing so I was adding in +1d6 for the rapier. It was brutal since shocking grasp is a very low level spell so I could do this a few times a day. I often one-shoted the monsters at the back.

I also used to summon a low level monster and then use Benign transposition to get myself out of danger (and other party members out of grapples and from being engulfed by gelatinous cubes etc). Or I would send the summoned monster into combat, the monsters would ignore them and then I would swap myself in, avoiding attacks of opportunity etc. Or I would use my summoned monster to a) get flanking on a monster and b) make it aid another (attack AC10 to either grant me +2 AC or +2 to hit). I also had adaptable flanker and vexing flanker feats to make me much more annoying: remember playing a sneak attacker is all about the set-up. You need to be able to get in, with huge AC and attack and do 6d6 every round, then get out. It takes some practise to know what is too dangerous and what is good.

A rogue with just a few levels of wizard can be brutal, especially if you use scribe scroll to bulk up on utility and other spells. Shield, mage armour and magic tattoo were also great favourites of mine for massively boosting AC.

12d6 damage is 42 damage on average, slightly less than the HP of a 5th level fighter.

d10 hit dice, Con score of 16, and 5 levels is 10+5.5*4+3*5 = 47 hit points.

Whoah! You can do that? I think that pretty much entirely changes my character strategy. Thank you for sharing that!

All in all, that was fantastic advice. Really, thank you!

Not with my Rat B**stard DM you can't (Sigh): he wouldn't allow it because in one of the books (I think it was complete Mage, there was a feat that allowed it and so he made me take it).

Oh and another piece of advice if you play a Rogue: learn the spell Shock and Awe: it is first level and is cast in the surprise round as a swift action. It gives your foes -10 to initiative and basically allows you and the party to batter them before they even get off a shot at you. The only caveat is that you have to get surprise, but you are a magic wielding hyper sneaky invisible thief right?

Good-night Vienna!!!

Oh and learn swift expeditious retreat because it can get you out of some serious cr*p sometimes: increases your base movement by 30ft per round and is cast as a swift action. Very handy for fleeing. Also, learn all the spells you can that have no somatic componets so you don't get hit with attacks of opportunity.

You provoke an AoO if you cast spells without somatic components. You have to cast defensively and make the concentration check if you want to avoid provoking an AoO.

Since this is the first time I heard of this, I am very interested to know which feat that was. I doubt it does what you DM thought it did.

Or cast spells with a casting time of immediate or swift action; those don't provoke AoOs either.
