But blaming these publishers for the "suffering" of roleplaying is what I called far-fetched.
Or unfair, but that is his expert opinion. Probably why he would not allow GURPS ruleset to be open source else it would invite aspiring but unqualified, incompetent publishers to flock to his system.

Based on what exactly? Sounds more like petty sniping than anything else.

What did the market look like for all of the non-D&D publishers before the introduction of d20 compared to what it looks like now?

If the market pre-d20 was not signifigantly stronger than it is now (and I would be willing to bet that it wasn't) then all of the "d20 is destroying roleplaying" is nothing more than a lot of smoke & hot air.

Steve Jackson is one of the very few people in the industry who can boast a $2.8M annual gross. I think his opinion has the weight of experience.

Perhaps. Then again, perhaps there are other factors in play as well. Do you have all the data? Your statement is not a logical conclusion.

Perhaps but I am not inclined to take anyone's word for it. Steve threw out a statement without any supporting evidence. That is hardly something I am going to take at face value.

Sorry but arguments from authority are worthless without corroboration.

Did I state that I had all of the data? I questioned conclusions made by others who have not show that they have sufficient data to blame d20 for "hurting roleplaying". What was the gross revenue of the industry in 99? What is it now? What were the numbers for non TSR/WOTC/Hasbro/D&D/D20 companies and games then and now? The folks making negative claims regarding D20 companies have shown absolutely no evidence to back up their claims that D20 has been a negative influence on the industry.

How can you seriously believe a claim that non-D20 RPG sales have been hurt because companies like Fast Forward Entertainment put out crappy D20 products?

That is true. Then you did the same. If, in fact, the market was not stronger then than it is now, it in no way proves "all of the 'd20 is destroying roleplaying' is nothing more than a lot of smoke & hot air." That's really my only point. Peace. :)

I don't. But until someone has all the facts, the possibility has to be considered. If SJ was referring to average quality per page published, and not the total revenue, he might just have a point.

Well, it depends on who all he counts. They do have a card game department and the on line store, the whare house, etc so not just RPGs.

Wow! We have a card game department? I always wondered what was behind that black door with all the smoke crawling underneath. :D

I did not realize you were working for SJG.

Any projects you can talk about?

Lets see, Will is a freelancer and lives in Austin, TX. SJG is also located in Austin. I guess Will is capable of being multi-talented/multi-system. Cool! So do you have any juicy SJG info to share?
