Steve Martin as Inspector Clouseau?!?

Steve Martin has a definate style. He's not at all the Inspector Clouseau style, IMO. Eh, I'll probably just watch the 1964 original again when this comes out. :)

Sounds like an awful idea to me. But then again, I thought that he would be really bad trying to do Phil Silver's Sargent Bilko (1996); and that Tom Arnold would be awful in McHale's Navy (1997); and that Jim Varney would be terrible as Jed Clampett in the Beverly Hillbillies (1993). Oh wait, I was right - they all were awful in those roles.

Hey, no fair! Here I was hoping to jump on with 'No, what are you saying? They were horrible!'

The only part of Beverly Hillbillies I liked was Buddy Ebsen's cameo - as Barnaby Jones.

However I will say that Mel Gibson as Maveric surpised me by being pretty good.

That was the only time I laughed during the whole film - but his cameo also highlighted how inadeqate the other actors were.

That's because Maverick did what almost all of the other 60's remake films missed - it showed some respect for the original. It was also well-written, well-acted, well-directed and gave James Garner a significant role in it.

Peter Sellers is fantastically good, and no one can fill his shoes. That said, I'm not too upset about this casting: I think Steve Martin might be able to do a passable job at the part, even if different from Sellers. Martin at his best is pretty darn funny.

I'll withhold judgement.
