Do you really need a special crossbow to fire bolts that are made out of a different material?

Personally, I'd lower the range and increase the damage of a crossbow.

It should have lower range and damage. It shoots a rock. It's less aerodynamic and slower than a bolt.

I don't know of any official, so here's my version:
Stonebow 25 gp 1d6 20/X2 60 ft. 5 lb. (B)

It's a bit lighter than a light crossbow, but not much. A little cheaper. But it does bludgeoning damage, and more of it than a sling. Good against undead. Any regular crossbow feats apply to it (like the rapid reload from S&F).

It could be a carved or polished rock. Made out of the right material you could get a very aerodynamic rock. Quartz breaks off at right angles and is easy to smooth. Rocks can also be made sharp, obsidian is sharper then glass for instance.

There is a Pellet Bow on www.dl3e.com. It was converted by James O'Rance.

Here is a copy of it:

Bow, Pellet
Price: 50 stl (about the equivalent of 500 standard D&D gp)
Damage: 1d4
Crit: ×3
Range: 90 ft.
Weight: 4 lb.
Damage Type: Bludgeoning

Bow, Pellet: A small sling pouch woven into the center of the bowstring allows this shortbow to fire sharpened stones of flint, with a range greater than that of a sling. The bow is slightly curved to allow the stones to shoot past. The barbarians of the Taman Busuk and Kharolis Mountains favor pellet bows, as they are unable to craft large numbers of straight arrows from the twisted timber of their mountain homes.

Historically I believe this weapon was called a "prodd". Sounds better than slingbow or stonebow or any of that.

I also have stats for it IMC-

Crossbow, Prodd 20 gp d6 19-20/x2 crit 80' range 6 lb Bludgeoning
Lead Bullets (10) 1 sp
Stones (10) - d4 x2 crit
