Stoneskin

Stoneskin came into use for the first time in my game last session. One of the BBEG Sorcerers used it. I don't know why but it has not been used to date by the PC's. Anyway, I just wanted to check that I am interpreting it correctly.

The spell provides DR 10/adamantine. If someone under the effects of a Stoneskin spell is hit by a weapon that has the Flaming or Frost ability is the fire or cold damage negated by the Stoneskin? I didn't think that it was but I just wanted to make sure.

Nope.

Energy damage is never negated by DR. The type of DR is irrelevant.

Touch attacks, OTOH....... :heh: :\

No, from the SRD:

A creature with this special quality ignores damage from most weapons and natural attacks. Wounds heal immediately, or the weapon bounces off harmlessly (in either case, the opponent knows the attack was ineffective). The creature takes normal damage from energy attacks (even nonmagical ones), spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural abilities.

Emphasis mine.

Because it sucks. It's insanely expensive. It's basically an NPC spell (like true seeing) because the DM only needs to have the components for one, maybe two castings (the one or two encounters with the PCs). Perhaps not even track the components at all (I'm sure a lot of DMs don't).

I agree. The spell which was a survival staple in earlier editions has never been cast even once by any wizard, sorcerer or druid in any of our campaigns since 3e was first released.

250 gp worth of diamond dust is not insane at all. Too costly to rely on repeatedly, yes, but that costs less than a potion of cure moderate wounds. It lasts 10 minutes a level too. More than enough time to clear a dungeon. If players fight only one or two battles in a day and then go rest, then yes the money is wasted. Otherwise this spell is great.

The sorcerer I understand since they should not be casting it repeatedly on a daily basis, but the spell is fine for a preparing caster.

And when fighting giants, this spell is a must. Even on a scroll, this winds up work it. 14 gp per HP is shaves off those clubs will leave the recipient being very thankfull.

FWIW:

In 2 of the games I've played in, Stoneskin was cast often enough to be noticed. In fact, in our high-level game the Rog 19 eventually got a Vest of Stoneskin 2/day (which is expensive, as you may well calculate).
